Johnnie Mae Jernigan, affectionately known as, “Johnnie” departed this life peacefully on Monday, August 9, 2021. She was born in Portsmouth, Virginia on November 29, 1932 to the union of the late John and Myrtle Jernigan.
Johnnie graduated from I.C. Norcom High School, where she was the captain of the cheerleading squad. After graduation, she moved to New York and began her career as an administrative assistant with the Social Security Administration. She found herself in a city, where she was more than comfortable showing off her own style and sense for fashion. Johnnie retired in 2006 and eventually moved to Hampton Roads.
She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Myrtle Jernigan; son, Derrick Jernigan; sisters, Deloris Shelton, Doris Dunn, Myrtle Malloy, Evelyn Johnson, and Margaret Jernigan. Johnnie leaves to cherish her memories: a sister, Beatrice Henderson; one brother, John Jernigan; a sister-in-law, Anne Jernigan; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
