Johnie Langham Silver was the fifth child born to Otis & Rachel Silver on July 6, 1951 in Boykins, Virginia. With Christ as his personal Savior, he fell asleep in death at home on September 3, 2024 (age 73) with full confidence, knowing he would be in God’s care and memory. He is predeceased by his parents, Otis & Rachel Silver; Stepfather-Clarence Hoskie Sr.; son-Johnie Silver, Jr.; daughter-Catrina Haskins; brother-Calvin Silver; sister-Mary McDonald and favorite cousin-Gloria Ward.
Johnie attended Norfolk Public Schools and graduated from Booker T. Washington. After a brief employment with Norfolk Community Hospital, he entered the United States Marine Corps as Machine Operator followed by USMC Reserves. He traveled abroad for many years and was honorably discharged August 1985. When military service ended, he worked for Raytheon (government defense company) and Smithfield Meat Packing.
Our mild spirit giant, “JL” or “Babyboy” was so easy to please, and very content. He had an enormous appetite and truly enjoyed family gatherings. He regularly called upon loved ones to whip-up his favorites. Johnie NEVER missed a meal! He mainly traveled by bicycle or bus and was always on time for a family event. His simple life included great food, great music, Let’s Make a Deal, Price is Right, Family Feud, Westerns, any Rambo-style or Sci-Fi movie and spending time with his 11 grandchildren plus their siblings too. Now don’t forget sports, he rooted for the Washington Commanders, LA Lakers, the superstars of WWE Smack Down and found great relaxation in crabbing and fishing.
Johnie L. Silver is survived by his wife Barbara Silver of 52 years; daughter-Jennifer Silver of FL, three sisters-Vivian Taylor of Chesapeake, VA, Laverne Greene of Norfolk, VA, Ollievann Perez of Portsmouth, VA; two brothers-Vernon Silver (Carol) and Clarence Hoskie (Debra) of Chesapeake, VA; sister-in-law, Brenda Walter of NC; brother-in-law, Ricky Outlaw of VA ; a couple of great grandchildren and tons of cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.
