John Robert Cook, Sr.

John Robert Cook, Sr. went to his home on Monday, June 11, 2018 after a brief stay in the hospital. Born on January 14, 1932 in Norfolk, Virginia to Vinnie Cook Burrell and John Atkin. John received his formal education in Norfolk a graduate of Booker T. Washington High School. He received his bachelor’s Degree from Winton Salam State University. He also serviced in the military. (Army) John worked with Local 1248 for 27 years. (Retired) He was a member of First Baptist Church of Lamberts Point at a young age until he moved his membership to First Baptist Church Bute Street. He was a faithful and loyal member. He served in the Male Choir and the Chancel Choir. John loved music and singing was his first love. He song with the Cook Family Singers for 14 years and with The Voices of Norfolk Concert Choir for 40 years. He
was known for his Dynamic voice and he used it to the glory of God. John also was a member of The Tux Club of Norfolk for over 30 years. (The Life of the Party) Affectionately known as “Cook” or “Uncle Edward”, John dearly loved his family and had a heart of compassion for the younger family members. Everyone who came in contact with him was inspired by his fun-loving spirit and his zest for life and his singing.

John was preceded in death by his wife, Gloria J. W. Cook; his parents, Vinnie Cook Burwell and John Atkins; a sister, Elaine Murrell; brother, Roy Burnwell; aunts, Evelyn Jennings, Alice Johnson, Clarice Branch; three uncles, Rufus, Willard and Willie, Sr. John leaves to cherish his memory a daughter, Princess L. C. Boykins; son, John R. Cook, Jr.; two grandchildren, William S. Boykins, III and John R. Cook, III; a great-granddaughter, Zalah Boykins; son in law, William S. Boykins, Jr.; daughter in law, Vonda S.S. Cook; brother, John M. Atkins; nephew, Terrence Murrell; great-niece, Emaya Murrell; uncle, Alfred Johnson, Jr. and a host of cousins and Friends. A Special Friend Mrs. Mable Eure.

    I’m truly sorry for the loss of your dear loved one. Please remember the promise made to us in John 5:28,29…All those in the memorial tombs will hear Christ voice and come out..Soon we will see our loved ones again
