John L. Simmons, of Washington, North Carolina, was born on September 10, 1929, to the late Bessie Simmons and John Reddick. A quiet and gentle spirit, John found joy in life’s simple pleasures. He enjoyed music, spending peaceful moments smoking his cigars, and observing the world around him; people-watching was one of his favorite pastimes. He also loved watching action-packed television shows and spending time at Sentara Pace, where he found community and companionship.
John was preceded in death by his parents, Bessie Simmons and John Reddick, and his brother, Ellis Roberson.
He leaves to cherish his memory, his loving sisters, Queen E. Walker and Neva Pearl Sherman, along with a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members, and friends.
John, we love you and we miss you. Your quiet presence and kind heart will always be remembered.

July 9, 2025 at 8:10 amMr. Simmons was a quiet person and responded well to one-on-one conversation. I would notice him to pat his feet to
the music when we had musical entertainment, rest in peace Mr. Simmons you will be missed at Sentara Pace Program.
