Joan B. Chatman

Sunrise: December 17, 1948

Sunset: November 7, 2020

It is with great sadness and a heavy heart to announce the untimely passing of Joan Burnett Chatman on Saturday, November 7, 2020, at Sentara Leigh Hospital.

Born on December 17, 1948 to the late Hazel Williams and John Davis, she was her parent’s only child. Born and raised in Manhattan, NY, she later moved to Virginia, where she met her husband, Leroy Chatman Jr. She was a phenomenally devoted mother to her two sons, Theron O. Chatman Sr., and Edgar E. Chatman. There was not anything that she would not do, or any sacrifice she would not make to assure the wellbeing of her family and protect the ones that she loved. She could “throw down” in the kitchen, loved to play her card games, go fishing at Harrison’s Fishing Pier and dance the night away to her favorite songs. She was also a Pass Member of OES Daughters of Sarah #164.

Joan attended Booker T. Washington in her adolescent years and shortly after graduating, went to work at Hillhaven Nursing Home as a Nurse’s Aide. Once her time was up there, she went on to work as a CNA, helping elderly patients in their homes. She was preceded in death by her brothers; Alvin and Lawrence C, and her sister-in-law, Elsie.

The legacy of Joan B. Chatman includes her husband, Leroy Chatman Jr., 2 sons, Theron O. Chatman Sr. (Vanessa) and Edgar E. Chatman (Donise), 5 grandchildren, Tiffany Bluford, Dominique Chatman, Cydni Williams, Theron Chatman Jr., and Daniel Chatman, her brothers and sisters in-law, Robert Chatman (Laquita), Wilbur Chatman (Nita), Gary Chatman (Algerita), Larry Chatman (Erma), Clifford Chatman (Gladys), Doris Narciss, Edna Chatman, and her loving devoted partner, John Riddick III.

Though this day is filled with great sorrow and grief, we must remember to hold our heads high and reflect on the joyous memories we all have shared with Joan. She was a model wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend. Long live the legacy of Joan B. Chatman; she will never be forgotten and forever will be missed. Joan, We Love You.
