Jennifer C. Sawyer

Sunrise: November 7, 1952

Sunset: January 19, 2019

Jennifer C. Sawyer was born on November 7, 1952 and departed this life peacefully at her home on Saturday, January 19, 2019.  She graduated from Elm City High School, ’71 and North Carolina A&T State University, ’75, with a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education. She received her Master of Education degree from Regent University, ’84. Her teaching career encompassed 30 years in Norfolk Public Schools, retiring in 2008.

She was an active member of Mount Olive Baptist Church, Norfolk, VA, serving on the Usher Board, Trustee Board, and the Golden Years Ministry among others. Throughout her journey, she found joy in traveling the world and spending time with her loved ones and friends. Jennifer was an avid reader and enjoyed teaching children the delight of a good book and developing their readings skills. She had an impeccable, eclectic style. She was known for thrifting to find the most unique, vintage pieces wherever she visited. She loved to dance and her laugh – that giggle – was from the depths of her soul. Whether meeting a friend for breakfast or a movie, enjoying the CIAA, MEAC tournaments and cheering on the Aggies at the Greatest Homecoming on Earth (GHOE), sitting on the porch enjoying the cool summer breeze, or people watching in New York City, she enjoyed her life and her family and friends found joy in being around her.

Jennifer was preceded in death by her mother, Thelma Cherry and brother, Charles Wright. She leaves to cherish her joy and memories, her sister, Cynthia Cherry; brother, Greg Cherry; aunt, Rosa Lee Cherry; cousin, Claudia Cherry; cousin, Malinda Faye Cherry Hayes (Elton); cousin, she often referred to as her “buddy”, Jackie Bullock; the Cherry family; the Lewis family; adored nieces, nephews, godchildren, including a special niece that was more like her daughter, Latonia Nikki “Guy” Bullock, and several other family, friends, classmates, and those that loved her dearly.

Mrs. Sawyer was my second-grade teacher at Coleman Place Elementary Schoo in 1997. She was so kind to me to even do my hair during the class time I remember with colorful rubber bands in my hair. I saw you at the chic fil a year ago and you still looked the same. May your family finds peace as you enter the gates of heaven You will be truly missed. God bless your family

Jenny and I were life long friends! I met Jenny in the late 70’s, just as we were beginning our careers in teaching. Our friendship continued for 40 pus years. Jenny was a genuine, caring person, and told it like it was! I have no words, only that a bright light was extinguished when she left this earth. My condolences to her family as well as my thoughts and prayers. Your memory will live in my heart forever!

Beautiful Jenny, I met & was friends with Jenny in the early 70’s in Jr. College, were we grouped together everyday. I move to CA & back to NC and searched for her over 20 years. Today, I found out on social media of her home going & the peaceful life she had. Most of all I miss sharing her pretty clothes & shoes, that she shared generously. To the Cherry, Sawyer Family & Friends, Heaven has gained a Angel”.
