Jazennie Deloris Powell

Our loving wife, mother, and grandmother, Jazennie Powell, also known as Jay, was welcomed into the world on March 17, 1956. She was called home to glory on June 27, 2024, at the age of 68. She was born in Jarvisburg, North Carolina.

In the ‘60s, she attended Currituck Union for elementary school, she then moved on to Grigg’s School once schools integrated. In 1974, she graduated from J.P. Knapp High School. From there, she attended the College of Albemarle. While there, she received an associate’s degree in nursing. Throughout her nursing career for 42 years, she helped many people. She worked as a registered nurse at Chesapeake Regional Medical Center, Bayside, Sentara Princess Anne, Portsmouth Naval, and Virginia Beach General. At Chesapeake Regional Medical Center, she spearheaded the Mom’s Mobile Program, where she put her lactation consulting to use.

As a young adult, Jay accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as her savior. On September 11th, 1976, Jazennie Lindsey married Carlton Powell. They met years earlier in the 1st grade. By the 4th grade, Carlton told his mother that Jay would be his wife. They were married for 47 loving years. Out of their union, 5 children were born: Kelly, Carlton, Jr., Chad, and Carvin.

She was predeceased by her maternal grandmother Hazel Bowser, her mother Hazel Lindsey, her in-laws Johnny and Margaret Powell, and her brother-in-law Marvin Powell.

She is survived by her husband Carlton Powell, Sr., her daughters Kelly McKenzie (Christopher) and Kacey Fortune (Hosea, Sr.), her sons Carlton Powell, Jr., Chad Powell (Jaime), and Carvin Powell (Ashlan). Her grandchildren, Hosea Jr., Naomi, Caleb, Micah, Alana, Alivia, Noah, Jacob, Ezra, and Avah. Her father James Overton and her great aunt Minnie June Seymour. Her sisters, Priscilla Herring (Maurice) Rayetta Owens, and Philomena Williams (Marcus). Her brother-in-laws: Johnny Powell (Lorraine), Vernon Powell (Priscilla), Weldon Powell (Nina), George Powell (Martha), and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins, extended family and friends.
