Janet Alexander

Janet Marie Yvonne Alexander peacefully transitioned from glory to reward on March 29, 2018. Predeceased by Mother Marie Polly Virgil and Father Lester Westmore Virgil. Leaves behind Uncle Allan Virgil (Valerie), Uncle Alfonzo (Sandra) and Aunt Grace. She was a mother of four Mark, Falon, Chloe and Fiona, she also served as a ‘Mother’ to many. Whenever there was a need, Jet(as she was affectionately called) filled it. Whether it was opening her door to a family that home burned down and raising a ten year old niece (Kenya Wright) as her own daughter into adulthood, the word ‘No’ was not in her vocabulary. Jet was also President of the Senior Choir of First Baptist of South Portsmouth for three years. She excelled in raising the standards of excellence as she served as President of the PTA at three different schools, Lakeview Elementary, Hodges Manor Elementary, and John Tyler Elementary. She was employed by a host of Hampton Roads notables. Namely Lawrence Goldrich (Cavalier Hotel), Federal Judges Henry and John McKenzie, Col. Norman Reams, In Style Clothing Store just to name a few. Along with being the perfect wife, cooking and talking was her field of expertise. On any given Sunday she was inviting the neighborhood to a cod fish and potato breakfast, complete with tomato sauce, avocado pear (it’s a Bermuda thing you wouldn’t understand). Jet leaves godchildren Christy Downey, Enoch Brown and his brother Jared, Sherman Wright, all of Andrea Peele’s children, well you get the point. Before babysitting was fashionable or profitable, Jet was the standard by which all other sitters were measured by (at least up until they were 2yrs old when no longer considered cute, said Falon). After her initial stroke in 2012 sister Josie often came to take her either shopping or on the Spirit of Norfolk. Not to be outdone her sister Rochelle who took her for change of scenery for a month to Rochester NY that lasted 7 months. Even though she loves all of our children equally our son Mark is her heart. There are so many stories in the adventures of Jet in the 21 Century, suffice to say the cold ink of a pen cannot equal the warmth that was in her heart. Jet leaves to cherish her memory a loving husband of nearly 39 years, Steven Alexander (who must now rely on his children to dress him), 1 son Mark Yuscef Virgil, three daughters Falon Simone Alexander, Chloe Nicole Alexander, Fiona Monet Alexander. Sister Joanne Booker, nephew Calvin Bean (Cheryl) great great niece and nephew Kobe and Zaria also niece Alizicia Booker. One brother Lynn Virgil (Bermuda Bye) niece Nikita Lynn Howard great nephews Randy and RaShaun Howard also great great nephew Kingsley). Sister Rochelle Cordell, nieces Torrie, Troi and nephews Trey and Troy, great great nieces and nephews Ta’Shawna, Justice, Jai, Har’Mahnie. Jet was also blessed with three beautiful grandchildren, Makaylah Alexander, Cori Johnson, Mekhi Roberts. She also leaves sister-in-law Troy Fitzpatrick (husband Rev. Sammy).
