Deacon James Edward Livingston, Sr., son of the late Clarence and Carrie Mae Livingston, quietly and peacefully departed this life on Saturday, February 4, 2023 at his home in Virginia Beach, Virginia with his loving wife, Darlene, by his side.

In 2000, Deacon Livingston joined Philippians Church of Christ Holy Disciples under the leadership of Elder Dr. Mary L. Woodhouse. He was ordained a Deacon on March 28, 2010.  He served faithfully until his health started to fail.  He was Chairman Deacon, Sunday School Superintendent, Trustee, greeted the guest preachers, van driver, and fulfilled the scripture “whatever ye do, do it hardly, as to the Lord.” (Colossians 3:17)

“Mann,” as he was affectionately called by his family and friends, was born January 31, 1959, in Washington, DC.  He graduated from Eastern Senior High School in Washington, DC in 1977.  He received his Associates of Science Degree from Tidewater Community College in December 2004 (Summa Cum Laude). Also, he received his Bachelor of Science Degree in 2007, and a Master of Science Degree in 2012 from Old Dominion University (both Summa Cum Laude).

Deacon Livingston served 24 years in the U.S. Navy and retired as a Chief Petty Officer in 2002. He received numerous awards and recognition for his leadership and service in the Navy.  From 1994 – 2002, Deacon Livingston assisted service men and women with completing their annual tax returns.  From 2003 – 2007, he became a professional tax preparer at H and R Block.  In addition, he assisted family and friends with completing their taxes.  Also, for nearly 20 years, Deacon Livingston worked at Hampton Roads Transit during the summer months.  Deacon Livingston was a dedicated technology instructor at Oscar Smith High School from 2007 to 2022.  He loved being a mentor and role model to his students and they were inspired by Mr. Livingston.

Deacon Livingston was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers: Anthony and Leonard Livingston; three sisters: Angela Livingston Alston, Denise Livingston, and Shirley Thompson Lawson.

Deacon Livingston leaves to cherish his memories: his devoted wife of 40 years, Darlene; one daughter Mukisha (Rajon) Gunter; and two sons, James Jr. and Jare’ Livingston. Our special son, Deacon Curtis Evans (Tashawna). Six grandchildren: Maquelah; Shakira, Zyreon, Maleah, Esaias, and Rahziela.  One brother, Gregory Livingston; and five sisters: Veronica Biddy (Alphonso, Sr.), Dianelle Clanton, Regina Livingston Ford, Linda Livingston, and Renee’(Steve); and a host nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.

Lovingly Submitted, The Family

Mr. Livingston was a true scholar and gentleman. I was blessed to work with him at Oscar Smith High School for many years. As a special education teacher, I encouraged my students to take Mr. Livingston’s class because they learned technical and, most important, life skills. Mr. Livingston always found extra time to mentor students who needed him the most. Mr. Livingston is missed, and I send my sincerest condolences to his family. May God bless them and help them through these dark times.

What a great friend and shipmate he was. Spent a lot of time with him in the New Orleans and VA Beach area. He gave me knowledge on writing my eval for CPO in the Navy and everyone that read it asked one question. Where did the word “trailblazer” come from. I told them a great friend who is a CPO. Thank you
