Mr. James Edward Hammond, 87, of Chesapeake, VA passed on Monday, January 18, 2021.
Dad was a strong, determined, family man. Working more than one job, Dad stopped at nothing to ensure his wife and family of nine children had everything they needed, although not everything they might have wanted. Dad loved cooking for his family, making certain plenty was available for any guests that might stop by. He loved to tell stories, especially of his younger life growing up in Monroe, North Carolina. Although his presence will be missed, knowing of his belief in God, his family is assured that the moment Dad took his last breath here on earth, he took his first breath in heaven, reunited with his wife of over 60 years, Audrey Mae (Fayton), as well as many friends and relatives.
Left to honor Dad’s name, rejoice in his home-going, reflect on the life he lived, and remember the lessons he taught them include: his last remaining sibling, Mary Frances Turkvan of Washington, DC; his children James Fayton (Carolyn), Edward Hammond (Joyce), Sheila Hopkins (Douglas), Jeanette Moore (Sherwood), Chris Hammond, Julie Braxton (James), Dennis Hammond (Marsi), Kevin Hammond (Gwen), Trina Rodgers (Leon), 26 grandchildren, and numerous great-grandchildren. He will also be sorely missed by his dog, Aubrey, who was his companion 24 hours a day.
A special thank you to the doctors, nurses and staff at Chesapeake Regional Hospital as they fought valiantly to help Dad return home; our brother-in-law Sherwood for being our eyes and contact while in the hospital amidst the COVID restrictions; and to Dad’s neighbors, like Mr. James Williams, who was an additional set of eyes in supporting Dad in his final years as he struggled with Parkinson’s and all that it included.
