James E. Fortson, Jr.

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of James E. Fortson Jr., who left this world on Monday, November 4, 2024, at the age of 66. Born on August 25, 1958, in Norfolk, Virginia, James was the beloved son of the late James E. Fortson Sr. and Sylvia C. Fortson Wesby. He was preceded in death by his cherished wife, Shirl D. Fortson, and his sister, Denise Lovick.

James was a proud graduate of Booker T. High School, and after completing his education, he honorably served in the United States Army. Upon returning home, he worked at the Shipyard in Berkley before finding his true passion for working on cars, a career he loved and took great pride in.

A man of deep faith, James was a lifelong member of New Hope United Church of Christ. He joined the church’s youth choir at the age of 11 and later became an active member of the male choir. Singing for the Lord was one of James’s greatest joys, and his love for music was matched only by his warm and generous spirit. He shared his voice and his heart wherever he went, touching lives with his kindness and unwavering faith.

James leaves behind his devoted sister, Debora Keeling, his son, Lamont Fortson Sr., and his beloved grandchildren, Lamont Fortson Jr.Kezia Fortson, and Labria Fortson, as well as his great-grandson, Kyriece Fortson. He also leaves a cherished circle of family and friends, including his grandmother, Evangelist Fannie O. Haskins, two aunts, Phyllis McCann and Sarah Roundtree, three nephews, Michael Robinson Jr.Milton Lovick Jr., and Justin Robinson, and his niece, LaToya Fries. He was also a beloved godfather to T-Asia Fries, along with a host of great-nieces, great-nephews, other relatives, and friends.

James’s passing leaves a profound hole in the hearts of all who knew him, but his legacy of love, faith, and song will live on in those whose lives he touched. His kind spirit, generosity, and unwavering love for his family and friends will never be forgotten. James was a man who loved with his whole heart, and he will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Rest in peace, James E. Fortson Jr. You will always be loved, and your memory will live on in our hearts forever.
