James Clifton Richardson, Sr.

Sunrise: September 20, 1938

Sunset: November 22, 2025

James Clifton Richardson, Sr. was born on September 20, 1938, in Johnston County, North Carolina, to the late Elder Richard Richardson and Ilar Malissa Richardson. On November 22, 2025, the Lord called him home to eternal rest at the age of 87.

He was raised in the South Norfolk section of then-Norfolk County, now Chesapeake, Virginia, where he attended public schools and received a formal education.  He later enlisted and proudly served in the U.S. Navy from 1956 until 1960, separating at the rank of Seaman Apprentice. James returned to Norfolk at the end of his military service.

In September 1970, he married the love of his life, Mary Anne Richardson. Their union was blessed with 55 years of companionship, laughter, and commitment. Together, they raised a beautiful family of five children grounded in love and strong values. James also worked in several different industries and learned various trades, including painting. He built a long and steady career as a painter with Norfolk Public Works on Naval Base Norfolk, retiring in 1996.

James accepted Christ at an early age and later became a devoted member of St. John’s AME Church in Norfolk, Virginia. He served faithfully on the Male Usher Board, supported additional church community service programs, including Helping Hands and the N.E.S.T. (Norfolk Emergency Shelter Team) program, and gave his time as a dedicated parent volunteer with the Boy Scout Troop. He believed in service, community, and doing his part with a humble spirit.

James greeted life each day with a smile and a lighthearted laugh, always able to find the true joys in everyday moments. He was a quiet man with a gentle soul who enjoyed reading the newspaper, watching westerns, fishing, and keeping up with current events. He was known for opening his home and heart to his beloved family. To a host of nieces and nephews, he was a second father—always there with guidance, support, and a place to land whenever they needed him.

James was preceded in death by his parents; three siblings, James “Jamie” Roat Richardson, Roy Gene Richardson, and Barbara Bass; his father-in-law, Milton F. Rogers, Sr.; mother-in-law, Mary I. Rogers (Quarles); and brother-in-law, Milton F. Rogers, Jr.

He leaves to cherish his memory: his wife, Mary Anne, and children, James Clifton Richardson, Jr. (Pearline) of Brandywine, Maryland; Milton Francis Richardson, Andrew Jacob Richardson, and Marlon Brandon Richardson, all of Virginia Beach, Virginia; and Mary Anne Richardson of Atlanta, Georgia. He is also survived by his brothers and sisters, Ronald Richardson (Sharon), Virginia Beach, Virginia, Lynette Atkins, Norfolk, Virginia, Lyman Richardson (Frances), Chesapeake, Virginia, and Deborah Richardson Alston (Sam), Charlotte, North Carolina; and a host of aunts, cousins, nieces, and nephews.

He lived a life grounded in kindness, steady faith, and dedication to those he loved. His presence was a blessing, and his memory will continue to be a source of strength and comfort. Though he is no longer with us in body, his spirit and legacy of love will continue to shine through every life he touched.

We thank God for the gift of his life and the many years He allowed us to share with him.
