Our beloved father, Patriarch, and leader, James Charlton Howard Sr., passed away peacefully in his home on Saturday, November 16th, at the age of 89.
James Charlton Howard Sr. was born October 28, 1935, in Norfolk, Virginia, the son of William Maddox and Hannah Howard.
James Charlton Howard Sr. grew up in Norfolk on Franklin Court. As a young boy, he worked at the local farmer’s market to help support his mother and sisters. He graduated from Booker T. Washington High School in 1955.
After graduating, James Charlton Howard Sr. joined the Navy in September 1955. While in the Navy, he served as an electrician on the USS Saratoga, the USS Independence, and several other ships. He shared stories about his experiences working on planes during the Vietnam War. His assignments included being stationed in Germany, Pensacola, Florida, and Norfolk Naval Base. In Florida, he was also a member of the Navy choir. After 32 years of service, he retired as Chief on June 30, 1985.
After retirement, he began working as a mail carrier at the U.S. Post Office in Portsmouth, Virginia. About halfway through his 20 years in that position, he transitioned to working as an electrician at the main post office on Church Street in Norfolk, Virginia. He ultimately retired from the Post Office after 20 years of dedicated service. Additionally, he was a member and former president of the National Alliance of Postal and Federal Employees Local 206.
James Charlton Howard Sr. married Willie B. Riddick on June 8, 1960. They were married for 54 years and had eight sons: James C. Howard Jr., Mark Howard, Rueben Howard, William Howard, Stacy Howard, Jason Howard, Rudolph Howard and Timothy Howard. James also had a daughter named Gladys Byrd and daughter-in-law Raydella Howard.
James Charlton Howard Sr. was a Past Master of Malachi Lodge No. 136 at the Norfolk Masonic Temple. He often enjoyed attending his son’s sporting events and watching the Washington Commanders (Redskins).
James Charlton Howard Sr. is preceded in death by his wife, Willie B. Howard; his children, Rueben Howard and William Howard; his parents, William Maddox and Hannah Howard; his sisters, Winifred Parker and Carolyn Howard; and his brother, Milton Howard.
James Charlton Howard Sr. is remembered fondly by his sons: James C. Howard Jr., Mark Howard, Stacy Howard, Jason Howard, Rudolph Howard, and Timothy Howard. He is also survived by his sister, Diane Vance, as well as a large family of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and colleagues.
James Charlton Howard Sr. was a person who helped and loved many, including family, friends, and colleagues. He was renowned for his humor, wit, wisdom, and honesty. He exemplified hard work and dedication. During this time, James would want us to cherish our memories, celebrate the good times, and love one another. Remember, he loved you all dearly.

I was deeply saddened to hear of granddads passing. He was such a kind and honest man who touched so many lives, including mine. He was the reason the military even cross my mind. His wisdom, generosity, and warmth is something I carry with me to this day and will always.
