Jacqueline Yvonne Cherry, affectionately known as “Jackie”, departed this earthly life to be welcomed into God’s Kingdom on February 10, 2024, in Suffolk, Virginia at the age of 82.
Jackie was born in Norfolk County (Chesapeake). Her early years were spent in the Gilmerton area of Chesapeake where she attended school. Jackie was a graduate of Crestwood High School, and after graduating high school she moved to Washington, DC.
While in the Washington, DC/Maryland area, Jackie was a supervisor at Glendale Tuberculosis Center. She also used her skills in sales to share her warm personality and love for the Lord with those she met. When Jackie returned to Portsmouth, VA, she joined the staff at Louise Eggleston Center where her kindness and compassion impacted many clients. Jackie’s last position was a concierge at the newly built Harbor Towers high-rise apartments; after which her health began to decline. Jackie became family to many of the residents there, and she was well loved.
Jackie married her high school sweetheart while living in Washington, DC. To this union she was blessed with one daughter, Nakita James of Franklin.
Jackie loved the Lord and was a faithful servant. Prior to her illness, she was a faithful member of Bethel Temple in Portsmouth. She loved her church family and Pastor. Her faith was an essential part of her life, and she was steadfast in sharing the Word of God with others.
Jackie is preceded in death by her mother, Lois Nixon and her brother, Clarence Nixon. She leaves to cherish her legacy of faith and love: a daughter, Nakita “Nikki” James; two brothers, Jacob (Eunice) Nixon, and Louis (Karen)Nixon, four sisters, Judy Nixon, Karen Weatherspoon, Kay (Carl) Bratton, and Jessica Nixon; one grandson, Darius James; two granddaughters, Darissa Sanders and Shatina James; 14 great-grandchildren, and a great-great grandson, and a vast family of nieces, nephews, cousins, and life-long friends.

April 8, 2024 at 1:01 pmI’m saddened to learn of this today. Jackie was one of the first people I met when I moved from Pennsylvania to Harbor Tower in January 1991. I left Virginia in May 1992 and I never forgot Jackie. She was a very welcoming person and treated me and my parents like family. Very kind. Her passing is a loss to all here on Earth. I wish I’d told her this.
