Quietly and gently, Jesus ushered Ivory Odell Grant McCollum to her Heavenly Home on Thursday morning, January 11, 2024. With sadness and joy, the family is grateful to God for her 93 years journey, leaving a legacy that her family can pass on from generation to generation. “Our circle has been broken, but her teachings and memory will remain in our hearts forever.”
Ivory Odell Grant was born in Conway, North Carolina on April 12, 1930 to Herman Odell Grant and Emily Barnes Grant–the oldest and only sister to three brothers: Herman, Jr., Ray, and Charles (a.k.a. “Pete”). She was a graduate of the South Hampton County School System. Her work career spanned over five decades as a baker, domestic engineer, and nurse’s aide at Bon Secours Medical Center (1975-2002).
Ivory Odell Grant entered into Holy Matrimony, October 31, 1953, to Isaiah McCollum. This Union was blessed with one daughter and two sons. Together, Ivory and Isaiah provided a home full of love and the “can do” spirit. In humble submission to the Will of Our Father, Ivory released Isaiah to the Lord after 44 years of marriage.
Ivory Odell Grant McCollum received Christ at an early age and was baptized at the Piney Grove Baptist Church. She joined the St. John Baptist Church in 1956 under the leadership of the late Rev. Samuel H. Lathan; the late Rev. Dr. Cleveland J. Freeman, and Rev. Dr. Robert L. Earls, Sr. Throughout the years, she had been active in several Church Ministries: Ushers Ministry over six decades; Sunday School Class Secretary/Treasurer; Seniors Ministry; Anniversary Committee; Women’s Ministry; Vacation Bible School; Travel Ministry and “As Needed”. Her sweet spirit and friendly smile will be remembered by all.
Ivory Odell Grant McCollum was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers, husband, and son in-law, Lee Coles.
Ivory Odell Grant McCollum’s memories will be cherished by her daughter: Cynthia Diana McCollum Coles; 2 sons: Isaiah McCollum, Jr. and Hilbert McCollum; 7 grandchildren; Ivory Mills, Crystal Coles-Ceesay (Abdoulie), Kevin Coles, Isaiah White, Tyrone White, Shendra Copeland, and Keyanda McCollum; 13 great grandchildren; 5 great-great grandchildren and a host of other relatives, friends and Church family.
