Ida Gibson Jacobs

Sunrise: March 16, 1937

Sunset: March 28, 2020

Ida Gibson Jacobs peacefully transitioned to her reward on, March 28, 2020.  She was born on March 16, 1937 in Brooklyn, New York to the late Luther and Lila Gibson.

She attended P.S. 138 and graduated from Samuel J. Tilden High School in Brooklyn, New York.  After high school, Ida worked at the Brooklyn Library while attending college part-time.  After marrying Oliver in 1961, they moved to Portsmouth, Virginia.  She worked many years at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard before leaving to work in her husband’s construction company.

Ida accepted Christ as her Lord and savior at an early age and was a member of Holy Trinity Baptist Church.  After moving to Virginia she joined Noble Street Baptist Church where she enthusiastically served on the Davison Circle Ministry and wherever she was needed.  Many years later, she joined Mount Lebanon Missionary Baptist Church where she was a member of the KARAR Dance ministry, S.N.A.P. ministry, Children’s ministry and other auxiliaries in the church.  She loved to serve people and to spend time with the seniors. She understood the value of kingdom service.  Choir members and parking lot workers were blessed by her small tokens of love. If anyone needed something sown or a garment repaired, they knew she could and would take care of it.  She always saw those moments as opportunities to serve.

Ida was well known in Chesapeake Public Schools as a parent who advocated for young people.  Her support of her own children and the children of other families was limitless.  No child went without with her knowledge.

Ida is survived by her son, Oliver Jacobs, Jr.“Ollie”(Michelle); daughter Ida Jillayne “Jill” Lee (Wiley), Jacquelyn “Jackie” O. Jacobs, Onella Nicholson (William) ; one brother, Kenneth D. Gibson (Betty), brothers in-law Willie Samuel Jacobs (Ann), Ronald Jacobs (Marlene); sisters in-law Annie “Curly” Newell (Edward) and Shirley Jacobs; great aunt Lillie Jacobs Coleman; grandchildren Justin and Ashley Lee, Olivia, Athena, and Ryan Wimbish, Oliver, III, Embrezia King (Charles), Milan Morris, William Nicholson, Jr. (Crystal), Charles Nicholson (Setarra). Mrs. (Maga) Ida Gibson, from the day I met you I always respected you as a beautiful strong woman who raised three incredible children. You are the mother-in-law of my twin sister Michelle Jacobs, who greatly loved and adored you. She often spoke about and so highly of you to the point that I felt I knew you just as equally. You lived a wonderful life on earth with loved ones surrounded by you. Now it’s time to join your husband in heaven and continue to be love. RIP Maga…we love you!
