Heyward was a friend to.all. A humble and kind man to his neighbors and animals alike. He could cook anything on his outside grill and often shared with others. He always waved, said hello and chatted a minute or two, whenever he passed by. Heyward was devoted to his wife Caroline and his family. He lived an honest and charitable life. We will miss him greatly.

Heyward provided the light of Christ along with his beautiful wife, Carolyn, who continues to exhibit this light to everyone she comes in contact with. This is a family I am blessed to know and love. I pray for the family and know God has him securely in His care now. I am appreciative God provided me to have had the opportunity to journey on this side of the veil with Heyward and Carolyn. I love you.

Although I didn’t get the opportunity to know him on a personal level, whenever he was outside it was always a pleasure to talk with him. He was so friendly that I was always hopeful that he would be out, sitting at his garage door, ready to talk to anyone that would pass by. He was an inspiration to be around and often changed my mindset knowing that he could help change my attitude for the good by just a short conversation.

Thank you for being a small part of my daily life !

Cummings Sr High School Class of 1972 says

During the early seventies, Mr. McKie was a teacher/coach at Cummings Senior High School in Burlington, NC. I will always remember him as a positive role model who cared about the students. He would challenge you to get the most out of any of the God-given talents you had, either in the classroom or on the athletic field. He was also a humble man. A few of us knew Mr McKie had been a standout athlete in college, but I never once heard him brag about any of his own collegiate accomplishments. Later we learned that he was inducted into the NC A&T State University Hall of Fame.
Mrs McKie, on behalf of the Class of 1972 of Cummings Senior High School, we offer our sincerest condolences on the passing of Mr McKie. May he rest in peace.

My heart is saddened Carolyn as I learned of Heyward’s passing today! His huge presence will be missed amongst his community! He was the best neighbor a person could have and was always kind to my late husband John and our kids! Our kids still talk about his sweet potato pies! Heyward was truly a people person and one whom we know loved his wife! I pray for your strength during the coming days, months and years — this is truly a process! Always in my heart!

Our hearts are heavy at the loss of a giant man in faith, family, business and friendship. He was a mentor to many and I am thankful for having met him when I was yet a four-year-old boy. He introduced Bernard and I who have been friends for 64 years. I shall never forget his smile, charisma and the great person that he was. Family, please accept our prayers and condolences.
