During the early morning of Friday, August 28, 2020, mama woke up n Glory at 101 years old. Helen was the fourth child born of the late John and Marion Wesley, she was born April 30, 1919, in Washington, D.C. and was educated in the public schools of Washington, D.C. When the Stancil family moved to Norfolk County (Chesapeake), she joined Little Zion Missionary Baptist
Church. Helen was a devoted member of the Senior Usher Ministry, Senior Choir Ministry, Deaconess Ministry, Sunday School Ministry, Noonday Bible Class and the Little Zion Missionary Baptist Church Senior Ministry.
She was also one of the Oldest Mothers of the church. Helen was married to Herbert N. Stancil for fifty years. She was preceded in death by her daughters, Barbara Backus, Bessie Walker and Marion Wall; sons, John Thomas Smart and Herbert N. Stancil, Jr. She is survived by her son, Alfred Smart (Theresa) of Dumfries, VA; daughters, Delores Lewis of Washington,
D.C., Beverly Clemons (Robert) of Chesapeake, VA, Phyllis Walters (Artis) of Honolulu , Hawaii and Sandra Whitehurst (Larry) of Chesapeake, VA; stepdaughter, Gloria Bell of Portsmouth, VA; forty grandchildren, sixty-nine great grandchildren, twenty-five great-great grandchildren and a special friend , Mrs. Myrtle Rawles.
