The beautiful Helen Elaine Akers gained her wings and departed to her heavenly home on September 1st, 2024. Helen Jones was born in Pittsylvania County on January 26, 1933, to the late Kate Lee Jones. At an early age, Helen accepted Jesus Christ as her savior and became a member of Callands Missionary Baptist Church. She married the late Wilson T. Akers in May of 1956 and from the union they had ten children. Helen Akers was a loving mother to her children, a devoted wife, and a caring grandmother. She worked and retired from Dan River Mill. After retirement, she moved to Norfolk, Virginia in 1986 to be near her children and grandchildren. Shortly after moving to Norfolk, Virginia, Helen joined the first Christian Fellowship Church and faithfully served in the church as a lay member. You would often find Helen in her garden or out with her children thrifting. She always loved to dress and accessorize her clothing to match her beautiful spirit. She was the epitome of a Proverbs 31 woman. She leaves her legacy to cherish four daughters Mary Hinton (Michael) of Clarksville, Tennessee, Ellawese Leftwich (Roy) of Danville, Virginia, Carolyn Reynolds (Thomas) of the Ahoskie, North Carolina, and Deloris Jean Akers of Murfreesboro, North Carolina. Four sons, Lawrence Akers of Portsmouth, Virginia, Larry Akers of Moyock, North Carolina, Terry Akers (Darlene) of Danville, Virginia, and Dexter Lee Akers (Kiauntee) of Tampa, Florida. She was predeceased by her daughters Paula Kay Richardson and Christine Akers, sister Lena Goggins, and brother Wayne Jones. She also leaves to cherish her sister Viola Davis, 26 grandchildren a host of great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren as well as nieces, nephews, and friends. We will remember the wonderful wife, mother, aunt, sister, cousin, and grandmother Helen Elaine Jones-Akers was the imprint she has left with her time here on Earth. This is not a time of sorrow but a time of rejoicing because she has made it to her heavenly home.
