Haywood Smith, Sr., the second born son of the late William Smith, Sr. and Clydia Mae Robinson Smith, began his journey with life on December 5, 1945 in Augusta, GA. At an early age, he accepted Christ and remained strong and never waivered in his Faith and Love of God.
Following graduation from Lucy C. High School, he enlisted in The United States Army.
Haywood proudly served in the United States Army, was honorably discharged and retired with the rank of Staff Sergeant. He served multiple tours of duty in Europe and Vietnam and was a decorated Veteran. Haywood was a Purple Heart recipient. He was awarded The Bronze Star Medal; Vietnam Service Medal (4 campaigns) Army Commendation Medal; Vietnam Cross of Gallantry; and Drill Sergeants Identification Badge. Following retirement from the Army, Haywood began a new career with the Department of The Navy and served for 20 years.
While stationed at Fort Dix, New Jersey, he met his wife of 42 years, Bernadine Branch and they were united in Holy Matrimony on October 28,1983. “Sarge” as he was fondly and affectionately called, was a loving, caring husband, father, grandfather, and God-Fearing man. He had a special way of making everyone feel at home. His big heart and generous nature was always on display. “Sarge’s” infectious smile and warm, friendly personality touched the lives of everyone around him. “Sarge” Never Met A Stranger He Was A “People- Person”! Peacefully, his journey with life came to an end on Friday, January 24, 2025 and he will truly be missed by all. His passing has left a void in the hearts of our family, friends, and many more whose lives were touched by him. “Sarge” will be remembered for the way his life was lived, and for the profound impact he had on the lives of those who had the pleasure of knowing him. Treasured memories will remain with his devoted Wife: Bernadine Smith of the home; His loving children: Haywood Smith, Jr. (Leigh) of Atlanta, GA; Sabrina Wilson (Gregory) of Dallas, TX; Anthony Smith (Jacqueline) of Midland, GA. Four Grandchildren: Julian Wilson, CPT (U.S. Army), Los Angeles, CA; Jayden Wilson; Chelsea Smith; De’Ja Smith; One Great Grandchild, Collin Moore; Two Brothers, William Smith, Jr. (Daisy) of Augusta, GA. Larry Smith (Beatrice) of Lithonia, GA; A God-Brother; William Holman “Skeeter” of Riviera Beach, FL; Special Supportive, devoted family friends, Katrina and Jeff Williams of Chesapeake, VA; Three Generations of loving nieces and nephews; a host of caring cousins; other relatives and many lifelong friends.
