Harry Lee Speller, affectionately known as “Gene”, of Norfolk, VA, peacefully transitioned from his earthly life on Thursday, March 13, 2025. Born August 1, 1941, in Windsor, NC, to the late Jimmie and Joanna Speller. Gene was the second youngest of twelve siblings.

A man of wit and profound wisdom, Gene, (aka) “Cigar”, was employed by the Virginia International Terminals, Inc. – ILA Local 1248 for over 25 years where he worked as a crane operator until he retired in 1990.

He was predeceased by his parents, Jimmie and Joanna Speller; one son, Lee Bazemore; six brothers, Uleas Speller, Curtis Speller, George Speller, James Speller, Joe Lewis Speller, and Robert Speller; four sisters, Mary Smallwood, Inez Mayo, Lucille Bryant, and Delphine Speller.

Left to cherish his memory are his devoted wife of over 21 years, Veora Speller; two sons, Eddie Bunch (Dawn) of Fort Payne, AL, Gene Justice (Shrieka) of Fayetteville, NC; two daughters, Lisa Matthews (Tolbert) of Norfolk, VA, and Joanna Boone of Chesapeake, VA; one brother, Roosevelt Speller of Chesapeake, VA; one sister, Leorie Speller of Portsmouth, VA; sixteen grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
