On Sunday, September 13, 2020. God whispered in our dear Gwendolyn E. Wilson’s ear and said, “It is time to come home.” Gwendolyn answered his call while resting at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. Gwendolyn was born on May 7, 1941, the only child of Robert Lee and Clara Jones. Gwendolyn was raised with her four aunts, Oretha Stone, Celestine Hill, Ruth Jones, and Gloria Wyche. Her grandfather, Deacon James Hill introduced her to our wonderful Savior Jesus Christ. She became a member of Mt. Lebanon Baptist Church at an early age, where she sung in the youth choir and ushered on the young adult usher board. Even in her later years she was still a committed and dedicated servant in God’s house. She and her two aunts the late Ruth Jones and Celestine Hill prepared lunch every Wednesday for the ones that attended noon day bible study.
Gwendolyn attended Norfolk Public Schools and graduated from the historical Booker T. Washington High School. Where she met and eventually married Robert E. Wilson, Jr. through this union they had eight children.
Left to cherish her memory are her four daughters, Tonie Poynter, Terry Carter, Glenda and Myra Wilson; four sons,
Tiran Wilson, Todd Wilson, Mark and Glen Wilson; the love of her life, Mr. Stanley Land and step son, Craig Land; twenty-three grandchildren, twenty-five great grandchildren, and seven great-great grandchildren. Gwendolyn’s life is treasured, and death is mourned by her aunt, Celestine Hill; her aunt, Oretha Stove; cousin, Loucille Sawyer, and a host of family members and friends.
Gwendolyn Wilson was a mother, protector, best friend, servant of God, but more importantly a woman of faith, who
will truly be missed.
