Gwendolyn Iris Christian Battle
On Wednesday, August 11, 2021 at 4:10 A.M., the Angel of Mercy came into our midst and gave Gwendolyn Iris Christian Battle “Gwen” eternal rest. Gwen was the middle child, born February 24, 1950, to the late James T. Christian, Sr. and Fannie M. Christian. She received Christ at an early age and was baptized at First Baptist Church, Taylorsville, by Reverend T. Melvin Steele, now New First Baptist Church, Taylorsville, Portsmouth, Virginia. She was a native of Portsmouth, Virginia and a 1968 graduate of I. C. Norcom High School, and also attended Norfolk State College, now Norfolk State University, of Norfolk, Virginia.
Gwen worked for over 30 years as a Driver Technician (Bus driver) for Portsmouth Public School system, then Tidewater Regional Transit (T.R.T.) which became Hampton Roads Transit (H.R.T) until her early retirement because of health issues.
She was married to Robert Stanley Battle for over 30 years and to that union was blessed with two children, Antoinette Lawanna Battle and Robert Diante’ Battle.
Gwen is preceded in death by her husband Robert S. Battle; parents, Deacon James T. Christian, Sr. and Deaconess Fannie M. Christian; Randolph Christian, Shaka Christian, Bobbie Christian; four sister-in-laws: Gloria Christian, Nettie Christian (James Jr), Gloria Jean Battle (Preston) and Cynthia Marie Battle (Ulus).
Left to cherish her memories are daughter, Antionette Lawanna Battle, son, Robert Diante’ Battle, two grandchildren Shawn Lorenzo Battle and Stanley Diante’ Battle, all of Chesapeake, Virginia; brother, James T Christian, Jr. (Vickie) of Brooklyn, New York; sister, Sharon E Goodman, (J. Milton) of Clinton, Maryland; brother-in-laws: Ulus “Bussie” Battle, of Chesapeake, Virginia, Kenneth Goodman (Rose) of Norfolk, Virginia; sister-in-law Triguanza Bryce Goodman of Virginia Beach, Virginia. And a host of nieces, great nieces, nephews, great nephews, cousins, and special and dear friends.
She loved the Lord and enjoyed living, being with family and friends, and traveling with friends and coworkers. Loved all music, especially gospel. She will be missed by all for her loving and caring spirit, and thoughts shared with others. And most of all, her joyful smile and laughter.
