Gloria K. Simmons, a beloved member of the Norfolk, Virginiacommunity, passed away on January 15, 2025, after a courageous battle with cancer. She was 70 years old. A devoted child of God, Gloria is remembered for her selflessness, resilience, and brilliance. She lived a life dedicated to serving others, consistently placing the needs of those around her above her own.
Born as the cherished daughter of Alberta H. Key and pre-deceased father, John H. Key, Jr., Gloria’s faith, and a passion for finance shaped her life’s journey. She was an active member of Bank Street Memorial Baptist Church for over three decades, where she served as trustee and treasurer, demonstrating her remarkable financial acumen and unwavering commitment to her community. Gloria’s devotion extended beyond her roles, as she regularly attended Bible study, Sunday services, and the women’s ministry, exemplifying her deep connection to her faith.
Gloria’s academic path was groundbreaking. Entering William & Mary college in September 1972, she was one of some 50 Black students on a campus of over 2,000. While earning her bachelor’s degree, she also made history in 1976 joining Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, crossing at the Mu Epsilon Chapter at William & Mary, helping to establish the first Black sorority on campus. She then went on to earn a master’s degree in business finance from Old Dominion University. This paved the way for her remarkable professional career.
Her professional career was equally distinguished, with leadership roles at Sovereign Bank, Nations Bank, and Bank of America, where she served as a branch manager and vice-president for many years. After leaving the banking industry, she applied her skills at Coca-Cola, continuing to make meaningful contributions to the workforce until her retirement.
Gloria was a devoted daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, sister, friend, and aunt who valued family above all else. She was the proud mother of her daughter, Carrie Speller, and son-in-law, Alan Speller, Jr., and the doting grandmother of two, Aniyah and Caiden Speller. She was also a loving sister to John H. Key, III, and sister-in-law, Kelly Key, and an adoring aunt to Shelby Key, Corey Webb, Tyler Webb, and Bryce Webb, as well as Sheree Payne and Matthew Simmons, the niece and nephew of her predeceased husband. She also loved and cherished herextended Haynes and Key families, and friends from Norfolk, Charlottesville, Penhook, Roanoke and beyond.
Gloria’s life was a testament to her resilience, particularly as she navigated the loss of her husband, Clifford L. Simmons, Jr., which prompted her retirement. Her ability to persevere through life’s challenges, while remaining steadfast in her faith and service to others, left an indelible mark on everyone she encountered.
Gloria K. Simmons lived a life of purpose, grace, and service. She leaves behind a legacy of love and faith, inspiring all who had the privilege of knowing her.
