Gloria Avis Basnight

Gloria Avis Basnight (aka, “GiGi’) was the first of eleven children born to Romeus and Nora Basnight, Sr., who preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by five of her brothers, Rayfield J., Romeus Jr., Ruben L., Ronny L., and Roland H Basnight, and father, Harry Cabarrus.

At an early age, she joined the Mt. Pleasant Missionary Baptist Church in Columbia, NC, where she sang in the choir and participated in the programs of the church. Later in 1979, she was asked to be a speaker at the Women’s Day Service that was given. She attended Gum Neck Community School and Tyrrell High School from which she graduated and then moved to Hot Springs, VA with her aunt. GiGi went on to move to Norfolk where she attended Tidewater Tech College graduating with her LPN license. Later, Gloria did some modeling, then returned to school at Norfolk State University. She became a real estate agent. GiGi worked many jobs during her lifetime. Gloria retired from Norfolk Development and began to travel.

GiGi was also involved in a few organizations such as the Civic League, Bowling League, and Senior Club, worked with the Election Board, the President of Norfolk State University’s Spartan Boosters, was involved in local community theater, and was also a member of The Red Hat Society. She was one of those people who loved to keep busy and stay active. She even played in the Senior Games, and she won many awards just like her mother.

Glory leaves to celebrate her memory her son, Frederick S. Basnight; grandchildren, Jordache (Christine) Robinson, Alpharetta, GA, Frederick II, Sherman Oaks, CA, Sharae, Phoenix, AZ, Cheyenne, Norfolk, VA and Amira Freeman, Fort Wayne, IN; great grands, Isabel Rodriquez and Olivia Stine, Phoenix, AZ, Orian and Ashton Roberson, Alpharetta, GA; sisters, Annie B. Cooper, Columbia, NC, Beverly G. Basnight, Virginia Beach, VA, and Nora A (Ladi) Basnight, Columbia, NC; brothers, Min. Randy L. (Millie), Roy L. (Wanda) Basnight, Columbia, NC; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends; special friends, Bob Brothers; adopted sisters, Gloria Craig and Kathy Stark and a dear friend from home Nettie Dyer, Columbia, NC.

    Ms Basnight was a longtime Civic Servant in the Berkley Neighborhood of Norfolk VA. She was given a Title of “Pearl of Community” as well as an Honorary Member of the Berkley Historical Society.

    So saddened to hear of the passing of Gi Gi. I told her I would always remember her because my Sister has the same first name—Gloria. We have so many memories during bowling years. Gi Gi will be missed. Such a classy woman and ALWAYS had a word of encouragement. Blessings family! May the Lord grant you perfect peace! Memories….priceless!🙏🏽
