Glenwood Smith

Sunrise: October 22, 1954

Sunset: March 22, 2025

On March 22, 2025, Glenwood Smith, lovingly known as “Dawho,” was called home to be with the Lord. He was born on October 22, 1954, in Portsmouth, VA to the late Henry Smith, Jr. and the late Ethel Mae Pugh Smith. Glenwood was preceded in death by his grandparents Henry Smith, Sr. and Bertha Smith, his parents, his brothers Joseph A. Smith, Lonnie Smith, and Julian Wood Parker; and his sister, Nancy Smith Brown; Aunt Gwendolyn G. Smith; Uncles Kenneth E. Smith, and Thomas Smith (Ann). He is survived by his siblings Henry Smith, (Elaine), Michael J. Smith (Judy), Thomas J. Smith (Angela), Wilbert Smith (Marguerite), Denise Smith, Diana Smith; Sam Smith (Barbara), Vickie Jenkins (Sellars), Phyllis Ewings, and Donna Colander, in addition to a host of uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews, cousins, daughter in love (Sheryl Battle), and grandchildren in love, special friend Marilyn McCray and family.

At the age of 10, Glenwood moved to New York with relatives. He returned to Portsmouth at the age of 17 and soon enlisted in the U.S. Army, 82nd Airbourne from March 1979 to January 1992. He was proud to have served in the military and received several honors. After military service, Glenwood was employed at the Norfolk Naval Base as a plumber for several years. During that time, he married Helen. They moved to Wilmington, NC, where they later divorced. While in Wilmington, NC, he was employed at the Water Treatment Plant where he later retired. Around this time, he accepted the Lord as his Savior and became a member of Fifth Avenue Baptist Church. There, he served as a deacon and usher. He loved the Lord, his church, and his family. He also enjoyed traveling, a good meal, and being with his family and friends.

Most will testify that Glenwood was a no-nonsense person, but he was reliable and willing to help. He believed in always doing his best no matter the situation. He will be missed.

The family would like to thank everyone for their expressions of condolences, prayers, flowers and cards, phone calls, and other ways of comfort.

    To the Family of
    Deacon Glenwood Smith,
From the Pastor, Ministers, Deacon board and Members at
    Fifth Avenue Missionary Baptist Church
    817 N. Fifth Ave.
    Wilmington, North Carolina.

It is with deepest condolences that we share with you this letter of bereavement. Let it be known that Deacon Smith was well loved. He was highly involved as a deacon of our local assembly until his health declined. He was a cheerful giver who loved to help those in need, with his time, talent and resources.
It is with great sadness to know he’s no longer with us physically.
2 Corinthians 5:8 says that to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord.
Glenwood took his task serious, as a Deacon and Usher and a Guard for the front door of the church, he stood his post just as he did in his military career, proud and dedicated.
Deacon Smith loved the Lord, he loved the Church, and he loved his Family in VA. and abroad and his Church Family here in Wilmington.
Our lost is Heaven’s gain, we love Deacon Glenwood Smith, but God loves him best.

    Humbly submitted,
    Fifth Avenue Missionary Baptist Church
    Wilmington North Carolina

    Pastor, Dr. Lloyd E. Carmon

Dawho was indeed a very special friend to me when I lived in Mount Hermon. We spent many late hours watching Dark Shadows on Friday night, eating bologna and cheese sandwiches, and just talking and sharing life’s concerns. He was a wonderful person and I enjoyed his company. He will be missed by so many. He was a cheerful person and all that knew him agreed that he was always willing to assist in whatever he could. So now, he sleeps from his labor, waiting for that trumpet that will sound, and the dead in Christ will rise first, and those who remain will be caught up to meet the Lord in the air, and so forever be with the Lord. Rest my friend, for your reward cometh soon.
