Glenda was born on November 12, 1950, in Wakefield, VA, to the late Joseph C.C. Young and Edna Langhorne, née Young (Judkins). She was the second oldest of seven siblings and resided in Norfolk, VA, where she lived a full and independent life until the very end. Glenda entered into eternal rest on Thursday, January 23, 2025. She passed away peacefully at Sentara Norfolk General Heart Hospital, surrounded by her sister, daughters, grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
Glenda was educated in Wakefield and Surry County Public Schools. She left home to continue her education and see the world by joining the Job Corps. Upon completion, she moved to Buffalo, NY, to join her older sister and initially planned to join the Navy. This plan was put on hold when she met the love of her life and future husband, Cleophus G. Peterson. After a brief whirlwind courtship, Glenda and Cleophus were married on May 17, 1970, and remained married for 47 years until her husband’s passing in 2017.
Glenda worked as a CNA over the years, but she considered her roles as wife, mother, grandmother sister, and aunt her greatest and most rewarding accomplishments. She was the first caregiver to all her grandchildren and one great-grandchild, finding immense joy in nurturing and shaping their lives during their formative years. Glenda’s greatest loves were family, singing, dancing, drawing, and painting. She loved the Lord and found comfort and solace in reading and discussing scripture.
Glenda is survived by her step-father, Roy (Skip) Langhorne, younger sister, Loretta Chamberliss; daughters Kimberly Williams (Anthony), Tonya Peterson, Aurora Peterson (Breon), and Aurelia Peterson (Elvan); grandchildren Gregory Peterson (Adrianna), Tionna Peterson, Sheldon Taylor, Ashia Williams, Karlton (Karli) Williams, Karon Peterson, Aubre Peterson-Ore, and Breeze Ore; great-grandchildren Cassius Peterson and Silas Peterson; as well as a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, and numerous friends.
Glenda was well-loved and will be sorely missed. She impacted the lives of everyone she touched and is remembered fondly by all. As our hearts mourn the loss of our beloved, we simultaneously celebrate and rejoice, knowing she has graduated into her heavenly body and is living in glory with the Lord and the loved ones who have gone before her. We commend you for a life well-lived on this side of eternity, Glenda, and say, “Well done, good and faithful servant. Welcome home.
