Gladys Sherrell Singleton, 82, of Norfolk, Virginia—a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, mother-in-law, and great-aunt—transitioned on Friday, March 7, 2025.
Style and fashion should have been her middle names, as they were a lifelong passion and a vibrant part of her personality. But beyond her impeccable sense of style, Gladys also had a deep love for plants. Whether it was a blooming flower or a simple houseplant, she nurtured them with care and attention—an extension of her naturally giving and nurturing spirit that touched everyone around her.
Gladys was a lifelong Virginian. She was born, raised, educated, married, and worked in the Tidewater area. Professionally, she served with dedication at both Portsmouth General and Maryview Hospitals as an Environmental Services Supervisor, later concluding her career at Holiday House.
Outside of work, Gladys’ life is best encapsulated in one word—FAMILY. Her loving and doting husband of 49 years, Moses Singleton, predeceased her in 2019. She deeply loved her seven children: Angela Singleton (Maryland), Tracie Singleton (Florida), Melvin Brown (Virginia), Robin Curry (Virginia), Gayle Sherrell Jenkins (Virginia), Cynthia and Todd Johnson (North Carolina), and Christopher Singleton (deceased).
Without question, she adored her 11 grandchildren, her 10 great-grandchildren, and her two great-nephews whom she nurtured from infancy. Known affectionately as “Granny G,” she cherished every moment with them. Her laughter, warmth, resilience, and pull-no-punches demeanor will be forever missed.
She is also survived by her three loving sisters, all residing in Virginia: Janice Arlene and Vernon Darden, Rubie Ransom, and Mildred Trower. She was preceded in death by her siblings, Regina Reid, James Sherrell, Melvin Sherrell, and Robert Sherrell. A host of cousins, nieces, nephews, great cousins, and family friends will continue to feel the lasting impact of her generous spirit and unwavering love—she often placed the needs of others above her own. Special thanks and heartfelt gratitude go to Mrs. Tillman for being a genuine friend throughout the years.
