Gladys Mae Smith, age 62, entered eternal rest at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital in Norfolk, VA on Saturday, November 13, 2021.
Gladys was born in Norfolk,VA on the 4th it September in 1959 to the late William Cotten and Gladys Pinkins. She grew up in the Norview section of Norfolk, later moving to Colonial Place, where she met her Blair and Maury family.
Gladys was educated in the Norfolk Public Schools system, where she graduated as a Maury Commodore in 1977. She attended Norfolk State University, but later went on to attend Wards Corner Beauty School. She went on to work at Sheer Pleasure Beauty Salon in Park Place for over 20 years, before retiring and doing hair from her home.
She is known for cutting hair, cooking food and cursing you out. If you never had your hair done by her, had her cooking her got cursed out, then you didn’t know Gladys. Her curse outs were always out of love and concern. She never told you what you wanted to hear, she told you what you needed to hear. Although she only had one child, she was a mother to many, having several neighborhood kids.
Gladys never let her disability slow her down, wherever she needed to go, she would get in her chair and roll. She attended every dance, cookout, reunion and funeral of her Maury High classmates.
She is so dearly loved, so sadly missed. She leaves to cherish her one and only child Natasha Smith and her 6 grandchildren, Charles, Trevis, Jayden, Lamoni, Latasha and La’Kyra all of Norfolk, VA. She also leaves to cherish her sister Vera Smith of Norfolk, VA and her brother Vincent Smith (Mary) of Chesapeake, VA; along with a host of nieces and nephews and her Maury High family.

November 22, 2021 at 4:29 pmLaughing and Joking, this was Gladys and I. Even though she always said I always looked evil we enjoyed each others company. When playing spades with her is when I got cussed out for winning.
Yes she will be truly missed by so many family and friends.
