Gladys Joyner Holmes

Sunrise: December 23, 1936

Sunset: February 23, 2020

In the early morning of Sunday, February 23, 2020 an angel of the Lord wrapped his loving arms around Gladys Joyner Holmes and carried her home. Born on December 23, 1936 in Princess Anne County (Virginia Beach), Virginia; Gladys was the daughter of the late Ananias Joyner and Georgia Whitmore Joyner. She was raised in the Bur-ton Station community and attended schools in Princess Anne County. She attended the United House of Prayer For All People in Burton Station and later in Norfolk, Virginia. She sang in nu-merous groups and choirs and served on the usher boards until her health declined. She loved to praise the Lord with her favor-ite songs being “Precious Lord”, “God Specializes” and “That’s Why You Are My All and All”.

Gladys dedicated her life to serving God by always caring and doing for others. She spent many years as a nurse and caregiver. Her doors were always open for anyone in need of a kind word, a place to live, or a good meal. In later years, Gladys decided to become a school bus driver for the City of Norfolk, where she took great care of the children riding her bus.
Gladys married Charlie Holmes, Sr. and from that union were three sons; Wesley, Charlie and Timmy. She encouraged and supported her sons as they became interested in playing musical instruments and actively participating in sports.

Gladys is preceded in death by her parents, brothers; Alan, Ana-nias, Early and Oliver, sisters; Lena, Carrie and Roberta. She leaves to cherish her memories: three sons, Wesley (Sondra), Charlie, and Timothy (Linda); brothers, George (Ophelia), Her-man, and Jerry; sisters, Mable, Alberta, and Betty (Ronney); sisters-in-law, Inez, Virginia and Valum; 7 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
