Sister Gertie Ann Baxter, daughter of the late Helen Simmons and Lonnie Baxter, was born in Virginia Beach, Virginia on Friday, November 8, 1946. She departed this life on Sunday, September 8, 2024.
Gertie worked for the Virginia Beach School Board as a cashier at College Park Elementary School and Providence Elementary School and was known as “The Nice Lunch Lady”. After 20 years of faithful service, she briefly worked for FoodLion, Inc. but then decided to be a full-time grandmother and caregiver to her grandchildren who loved her so very much. The first question she’d always ask as they entered her home “Are you hungry?”…” Did you eat?” And of course they’d always say “Yes, I’m hungry”. Then she would get busy and in her words “Let me find something for them to eat.”
Sister Baxter was a loving sister, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend. She expressed her love through countless acts of kindness such as cooking, attending events, and welcoming everyone with open arms into her home.
Gertie was preceded by her brother Johnnie Baxter, two sisters: RosaLee Baxter and Evelyn Simmons; and three daughters: Litha Ann Speller, Pamela Ann Owens, and April Speller. She was survived by three daughters Robin Bernice Banks (Husband – Michael Banks); Angela Marie Barnes (Husband -Bartt Barnes, Sr); Marylyn Johnson (Fiancé – Jonathan Ferabee); son, Robert Lee Speller, Jr ( Fiancé – Chasity, Shockley); and Andre Baxter (who she raised from birth); 11 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren, and a host of cousins and many friends.

September 15, 2024 at 9:00 pmI was so saddened and heartbroken to hear of Ms Gertie’s passing. She played an important role in my life and helped mold me into the man I am today. She was someone who watched me and my brothers grow up and always made me feel welcome. Later in life she did the same for my son and ensured he followed the straight and narrow. I’ll always remember her warmth, her kindness, and the love she shared with everyone around her.
I’m sending you and your family all my love and strength. Wishing you comfort and peace during this incredibly difficult time.
