On August 20, 2022 Geraldine Goode Wesby, affectionately known as “Granny”, transitioned from her life here on earth to her eternal life in Heaven with our Lord. Geraldine was born on December 10, 1931 in Franklin, VA. She was the daughter of the late Walter and Lucy Lawrence.
Geraldine was a product of Portsmouth Public Schools. She graduated from I C Norcom High School where she was inducted in the Hall of Fame for basketball and was also a cheerleader. She went on to graduate from Shaw University in Raleigh, NC. Geraldine began her teaching career with Chesapeake Public Schools and retired after 32 years. She touched and inspired countless children’s lives during her tenure.
Granny started her adult christian journey at New First Baptist Church Taylorsville, Portsmouth, VA where she served in the Senior Choir and Crusaders Chorus. She was also a member of First Pentecostal United Holy Church, Norfolk, VA and Living Waters/Restoration Church in Newport News. She currently attended Abundant Life Christian Community Center in Portsmouth, VA where she served as a church mother. When she walked through the doors she would proclaim her favorite saying, “I GOT A FEELING, EVERYTHING GONNA BE ALRIGHT”. Granny was always the church candy lady and children as well as adults left with “a goodie bag”. Granny loved football and was an avid Dallas Cowboys fan. She also enjoyed watching professional and college basketball.
She is preceded in death by her parents Walter and Lucy Lawrence; sister, Clarine Bowser; great grandson, Aari Odera and daughter Valerie Hester. She leaves to cherish her memory her daughter, Doreen Grady; three grandchildren, Purnell Hester, Jr, Stephanie Odera (Arnold), and Corey Daniels. Also, the family pet dog, Brooklyn who was constantly by her side until the end.
Geraldine, aka “Granny” will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.
