Mother Geraldine Kearney (Fayton), 82, transitioned from her earthly to her heavenly home on Saturday, March 18, 2023. A beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, she served the Lord as an anointed and highly skilled organist and pianist throughout her life. The daughter of William Henry and Willietta Fayton Sr., she attended Booker T. Washington High School and was employed at the Norfolk Naval Base for over 25 years. Mother Kearney also served as a support staff for Norfolk Public Schools at St. Helena Elementary School. Her piano playing began as a toddler, fulfilling a prophecy spoken to her mother as a divine gift from God. As an adult, Mother Kearney used her gift of music by playing the organ at the New Hope Church of God in Christ faithfully. Her spiritual gift was shared throughout churches across the Tidewater area for decades. She especially enjoyed playing for, and singing with, her sisters and brothers (the Fayton Singers)—Audrey Hammond, William Henry Fayton Jr., Vivian Wright, Betty Clark, Herbert Fayton Sr., Patricia Gregory, Floyd Fayton, Barbara Gaines, and Gail Boyd. Two of her memorable solos were “I Shall Wear A Crown” and “Well-Done.”
Mother Kearney was the devoted wife of MSgt Hubert L. Kearney Sr., USA, Ret. for 39 years until his passing in 2019. She is survived by her five children—Donald Speller, Sr. (Alice); Regina Butler (Thomas); Julius Speller (Breeana); Valerie Walton (Harold); and Craig Speller (Sabrina)—along with a host of grand, great-grand, great-great grandchildren, nieces and nephews, cousins, and her sisters-n-love Doella Fayton and Cynthia Fayton. She loved Jesus with all her heart as mother would often say… “I love the S-U-N, but above all the I love The S-O-N!” We know that our mother is resting in the arms of Jesus. To God be all the glory!

March 24, 2023 at 11:17 pmIt seems like such a short while after meeting Mother Kearney that I can see the wisdom and love that she shared as she taught and played the keyboard. The message was clear that she loved Jesus and his children. I also pray for the entire family. It looks like yearly that I meet another family member. Sending our Prayers and Condolences.
