Georgia Lee (Sweet Thing) Thompson, 86, of Portsmouth, Virginia, peacefully passed away on Tuesday, February 25, 2020 surrounded by her loving family. She was born to the late Edward A and Hazel Mae Coston on November 15, 1933 in Portsmouth, Virginia. Georgia’s sweet nature and always wearing a cheerful smile earned her the nickname ‘Sweet Thing.’ She was a graduate of I.C. Norcom High School where she enjoyed playing on the basketball team. During her teen years she met the love her life, the late Billie Marshall Thompson, Sr. They moved to New York and married on October 3, 1952. The couple made new friends and enjoyed living in New York for many years before the birth of their first child in March 1964. Expecting their second child, they purchased their first home in Long Island, NY where they settled and raised their family.

‘Sweet’ retired and moved back to Portsmouth, Virginia in 1995 after Billie passed. She enjoyed hanging out with family and friends and traveling. She was an active member of The Red Hat Society. As a “Red Hatter,” Georgia enjoyed wearing her elaborate hats and loved fashion. Georgia had an unwavering faith in God and was long time member of Grove Church where
she loved ‘Fun Fridays.’ Her biggest joy was talking about and spending time with her 3 grandchildren. At an early age Georgia devoted her life to God, enjoyed her daily devotions, walking for exercise, shopping, and dining out. She also loved to sing,
listening to spiritual and jazz music, dancing; she had a mean 2 step! Georgia had a very kind heart and a quick wit. She will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her.

She was predeceased by her parents Edward Coston and Hazel Coston-Marshall; husband Billie M. Thompson Sr., Brothers: Edward Coston Jr., George Coston, Eugene Coston, Richard Coston, and Wilfred Coston; Sisters: Easter Mae Jones, Vivian Winborne, Alexzina Mitchell. She is survived by her children, Monica Hunt (Dexter) Chesapeake, VA and Billie Thompson Jr. Brooklyn, NY, her adored Granddaughters Damika Powell and Talha Asif of Chesapeake, VA; Grandson Hassam Asif Brooklyn, NY; great-grandson Uriah Daniel. Sisters Yvonne (Ronchester) of Portsmouth, VA, Brenda Marshall Washington DC, Reverend Phyllis Whichard Portsmouth, VA; Brother Clarence Coston (Charles) Apopka, FL and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.
