George Patterson Moody

George Patterson Moody peacefully transitioned on November 24, 2019. He was born April 8, 1931 in Emporia, VA to the late Daisy Young and George Edward Moody. George grew up in Douglas Park. He was drafted into the Army during the Korean War and served as a Tank Sergeant. After completion of his service, he attended and graduated from Virginia State University, with a bachelor’s degree in Industrial Education. George taught Building Trades in Portsmouth Public Schools for 31 years. During his teaching career, he was also a successful entrepreneur. He built homes, founded Moody Ornamental Iron and made burial vaults for local funeral homes. He retired from the school system in 1991 but continued with his businesses until permanently retiring in 2011.

George has been a lifelong member of Noble Street Baptist Church. He served as a trustee and in many other capacitates over the years. He was also a member of the Washington Masonic Lodge #323 and the Eureka Club. On August 9, 1952, George married Clarice Jordan, and to that union were born two children, Dr. Wanda Moody –Murdock (Joseph) of Carmel, IN and Roderick Moody (Deana) of Upper Marlboro, MD. He is also survived by grandsons, Marcus Moody and Wade Alexander Murdock and granddaughter , Carmen Moody; sisters, Barbara Jean Cure of Manchester, NJ, Daisy Lee of Norfolk, VA and Veronica Moody-Johnson of Portsmouth, VA.; friend Marquita Johnson and numerous other friends and family. He is preceded in death by his wife, Clarice Jordan Moody; sister, Iris Grace Martin and brothers, Millard Moody, Sr., Chester Moody and Jerome Moody.
