George H. Banks

George H. Banks, 88 passed away at home on Saturday, December 26, 2020.

George was born November 28, 1932 in Norfolk, VA to the late John and Fannie Banks.

George attended Abraham Lincoln Elementary School and graduated from Booker T. Washington High School. He was also educated at Norfolk State University (formerly Norfolk State College).

He began his career honorably serving in the nation during a time of war as a member of the US Army in  Korea, followed by 19th years of civil service. He was a lifetime member of St. Mark UCC in Norfolk, served for many years as Chairman of the Building  Fund. George served on various boards, which includes, Director of The STOP organization with CEO Edith Jones, Southside Boys and Girls club with Coach Williams, NAACP Norfolk branch, The Norfolk Recreation Commission, President/Chairman of the Beacon Light Civic League, Project Manager of Beacon Light CHDO, Manager of Bell Diamond Manor and Sumler Terrace Apartments. He worked on an array of city projects. In 2018  he was inducted to the Hampton road African American Sports Hall of Fame, and community advocate and business partner.

George is survived by his wife, Delores Banks; daughter, Cheryl (David); brother, Rufus Banks, Sr. (Louise); six grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; five great-great grandchildren; an adopted daughter, Sherry Harold (Gregory); an adopted son, Bernard “Pee-wee” Thompson (Juanita); sister-in-law, Louise Banks, Doris Hawkins and Beverly Kelson; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends.

George was predeceased by son, Edwin R. Banks; and two brothers Arthur King, Sr. Samuel Banks.

    This is really a big personal loss for me. I will miss the many hours we spent talking about the Community and Projects and family and the Bible. Thank you Mr. Banks for giving me opportunity after opportunity to develop in business and character.     Prayers and Heartfelt Sympathy to the Banks family. Mr. George Banks was a dedicated member of the Southside Senior Center/Norfolk Parks and Recreation. He attended the center everyday. He loved competing with the younger male seniors in Billiards(pool). He would win most of the games, let him tell it he won them all, he also won first place ribbons at the Norfolk senior Olympics. Whenever needed he was there to support the Center. Mr. Banks will be missed!

    We are so sorry for your loss. The death of a love one can be extremely difficult to cope with. Many have found comfort in the promise found there at Acts 24:15. There it speaks about the Resurrection. Do draw comfort in the promise found there and please know you and your family will be in our prayers…MaryAnn
