Fred Edward Robinson, Jr. came into this world on December 02, 1921 and transitioned on October 11, 2019. He was born, raised and lived his entire 97 years of life in Norfolk, Virginia. He was the eldest of three children born to Fred E. Robinson, Sr. and Essie (Morris) Robinson. After attending Booker T. Washington High School he worked at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard where he was employed as a Receiving Clerk. In 1943, just after the attack on Pearl Harbor and shortly after America entered World War II, he enlisted into the United States Army at the age of 22. He was a Munitions Worker, 190 2nd Ordnance Ammunition Company (Colored Troops) and saw active service during the Second World War in the Mediterranean Theater (Corsica), North African Theater (Egypt) and European Theater (Germany and Italy). He was injured when a bomb shell exploded sending shrapnel into his hand amputating part of one of his fingers. He served this nation and received an honorable Discharge in 1945. After his military service, he was employed and retired from the United States Post Service
as a Letter Carrier with 44 years of Government Service. As a letter carrier his salary started as sixty-five cents per hour (that would be $26.00 for a 40-hour work week). While with the Post Office he held many positions, received many commendations,
awards and was a union delegate as well as shop steward. He was also a member of the National Association of Letter Carriers. After his retirement from the Post Office he went to work for Colorcraft Corporation, a photo developing and printing company which was located in Downtown Norfolk.
He was a member of First United Presbyterian Church for over 60 years. Fred was an active and valued servant who for many, many years (until age and mobility prevented continuing) he was a church Trustee and Treasurer. Fred loved his beloved Washington Redskins. He was a “tried and true” fan. Throughout the team’s good years and “not so good” years, his love for the Redskins never faded. During his last days he would state repeatedly, “I’m tired; I want to go home” and “the Lord is my Shepherd”. He knew Christ was his Savoir, heaven would be his home. He is predeceased by his beloved wife of 59 years, Mother Rosa Lea Robinson who transitioned into heavenly eternity on March 20, 2011. Also predeceased are his two sisters, Essie R. Simpson and Alice S. Harding. Fred leaves behind to cherish his memory two stepchildren David Brickhouse, Evangelist Dr. Janice Saunders (Elder Dr. Jasper Saunders Sr.); four grandchildren Elder Jasper Saunders, Jr. (Missionary Lisa), Jason Saunders (Katrice), Jamean Saunders-Santouse and Traci Jones (William aka “BJ”), seven greatgrandchildren,
two great-great grandchildren, one god-daughter, a brother-in-law Linwood Walker Sr., a host of nieces, nephews and numerous friends. A special family friend Clarence McFadden. Lastly, Fred also leaves behind his beloved canine buddy and
companion Hercules, as well as his parrot Chopper.
