Flora Mae Cross Faulk peacefully slipped into eternal rest on Thursday, August 29, 2024. She was born on March 26, 1950, to Simon and Ruth Inez Brown Cross in the Hattonsville section of Norfolk County, the youngest of seven children, affectionately known to family and friends as “Flo.”
Flo was educated in the Portsmouth Public Schools system and used her many talents throughout her varied and successful career. She served as a supervisor of housekeeping at the Navy Medical Center in Portsmouth, worked as a fabrication specialist at both the Norfolk Navy Air Station and the Norfolk Naval Base, and cared for others as a nurse at Loving Care Nursing Home. Flo also worked with J & E Security Company before embarking on her entrepreneurial journey, founding Faulk Medical Transport, which later merged with C & E Medical Transport. The business, co-owned with her brothers Arthur Cross Sr. and Robert Epps, employed family and close friends, embodying the values of unity and hard work.
A devoted woman of faith, Flo accepted Christ and was a member of Olive Branch Baptist Church under Pastor Lamar Sharp. She continued her service under Dr. James B. Sharp and was later reinstated under Dr. Ernest L. Reid Jr.
Flo was known for her many talents, her love of cooking, traveling, and decorating, as well as her creative flair for fashion, often designing hats, bows, and home decor. Her bold yet graceful style was admired by all who knew her. Flo was more than just a fashion icon; she was a wellspring of wisdom and kindness. She offered support and guidance to everyone, especially her nieces and nephews, who found in her a confidante and trusted mentor. Her warmth, attentiveness, and wisdom made her a beloved presence in the lives of all she touched.
Flo was preceded in death by her parents, Simon and Ruth Cross; her sisters, Eleanor Wilson and Magdaline Cross; and her brothers, Herbert Lee Cross, Earl Jacob Cross, Arthur Lee Cross Sr., and George Thomas Cross Sr.
She leaves to cherish her memory her daughter, Veronica Ann Faulk; her son, Willie Leroy Faulk Jr.; three grandsons, Adrian Jamal Faulk, Aaron Simon Faulk, both of Portsmouth, VA, and Brandon Tyrell Faulk, United States Army, stationed in San Bernardino, CA; two granddaughters, Cameryn Marie Faulk of Richmond, VA, and Ny’Asia Destiny Arie Faulk of Norfolk, VA; two great-grandchildren, Nylaah Marie Cowan of Portsmouth, VA, and Rhy’Leigh Kori Faulk of Georgia; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and a loving extended family.
Flo’s legacy of love, wisdom, and faith will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.
This life story was written to honor Flora Mae Cross Faulk’s life and legacy while reflecting on her personal qualities, family, and faith.
