Evelyn S. Comer

Sunrise: July 31, 1928

Sunset: November 19, 2022

I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, and I have kept the faith.” II Timothy 4:7   On Saturday, November 19, 2022, surrounded by her loving family, Evelyn Sommerville Comer received her wings and went to walk amongst the angels. Evelyn was born July 31, 1928 in Norfolk, Virginia to Robert and Irene Sommerville. Her parents raised a loving and hardworking family in the Lambert’s Point section of the city. Her four brothers- Robert Jr., Edward, John, and Lawrence and two sisters – Mildred and Blanche, were all educated in the Norfolk Public Schools system. In November of 1948, Evelyn married the love of her life, Percy Comer. Percy and Evelyn were married for 53 years. Evelyn’s joy was infectious, and she possessed a spirit and smile that could light up any room. Her greatest love was God and her family and it was a blessing to call her Mom, Grandma, Aunt, Cousin and Friend. Evelyn was a longtime member of New Mount Vernon Baptist Church in Portsmouth, Virginia and loved her church family dearly. A true family matriarch, Evelyn played an integral role in the lives of her two daughters and five beloved granddaughters. Spending time with family, sitting on her front porch on a nice day waving to neighbors and watching her favorite shows in her comfortable recliner are things that she loved the most. She will always be remembered for her quick wit, amazing sense of humor and love for good food. Evelyn was predeceased by her husband, Percy Comer, and her six brothers and sisters. Left to rejoice in her memory are her daughters, Janet Jefferson (James) and Deborah Green; granddaughters, Tiffany Jefferson, Tonya Harvey (Michael), Felicia Green-Holloway (Charles, Jr.), Kia Green, and Neyarnda Green and great granddaughter; Myah Harvey.
