Remembering a Classy Lady

Evelyn Powell-Porter, our beloved mother, grandmother, great grandmother, great-great grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin and friend was called home on Monday, January 25, 2021. She was born July 14, 1937 to the late Luther Grimes and Lucille Freeman. She was united in marriage to the late Rudolph C. Porter.

She attended Norfolk Public Schools. She retired after 30 years of service from NRHA Program Management. She was a member of Garden of Prayer #3 COGIC under the leadership of William Dan White, Jr. where she served on the Mother Board.

Evelyn’s Many Accomplishments: Certificate of Culinary Arts, Completion of General Business degree, Certificate of Graduation Project and Further Enhancing the Community, Certificate of Completion Drug Program Specialist 2003, WAVY 10 Civic Organization Award, News 3 Community Outreach Award, NRHA Outstanding Citizen Award, Mother for Crosstown Bussing, Presidential Award for Tenant Management, Outstanding Community Service Award from Senator Yvonne Miller, Certificate of Appreciation Community Service, Outstanding Community Leadership Award from Gov. L. Douglas Wilder, Outstanding Community Leadership Award from Mayor Paul Fraim, Outstanding Service Award from Sen. Yvonne Miller. and Task Force of Education Award with Yvonne Miller. She was a member of American Legion Auxiliary Attuck Unit #5.

She loved attending church. She enjoyed watching TV and talking on the phone. Most of all, she enjoyed feeding her children and grandchildren junk food when they came to visit. She was affectionally known as Evelyn by her grandchildren, Grandma Girl (Leslie), and Grandma Twin (Teresa). She will be missed by all.

Evelyn was preceded in death by three sisters, Odessa Blunt, Mary Ann Strub and Josephine Person and two children, Dock L. Powell Sr. and Rita L. Powell.

She leaves to cherish her memory five sons, Barry Powell, Tyrone Powell, James Powell, Shawn Grimes and Charles Drummond, two sisters, Glory Jean Spearman and Bessie Lee Howell, a special daughter-in-law Darlene Powell, goddaughters, Bessie Davis and Janice Rogers, a special friend Ralph Finkley and grandchildren to great-great grandchildren, nieces and nephew who she loved so much.

    A mother and a true friend indeed, I will miss our daily phone calls you calling me at work saying you want some Wendy nuggets, chicken breast from Popeyes and a babaque sandwich from Dumares. The laughs good advice the fussing outs when I needed them. My hats off to a great queen and the rock of our family mom you will truly be missed but never forgotten. My heart will always carry that special love for you queen. I may shed a tear from time to time but I know your love will keep me.
