Evelyn Gordon Mitchell, 94, entered her eternal rest on Thursday, May 29, 2025, at Chesapeake Health and Rehabilitation Center. She was predeceased by her life partner, Otis Melvin, and parents Carrie Gordon and Thomas Cooke.
She was born April 7, 1931, in Norfolk, Virginia. Evelyn attended Booker T. Washington High School. She was a member of St. Paul Church of God in Christ, Norfolk, VA. Evelyn later joined the Order of the Eastern Star in Hampton, VA. Evelyn had an insatiable love for traveling that she shared with her local community by sponsoring community trips for her club sisters, Ms. Madeline and Ms. Mildred. After retiring, she continued to be an active member in the Eastern Star and relished joining her lodge sisters and brothers on trips to various locations across many parts of the United States.
Evelyn had a talent for maintaining an immaculate home. She prided herself on cooking delicious home-cooked meals and desserts for family and visitors. Evelyn’s most pleasurable pastime was watching her favorite channels and shows throughout the day, including news broadcasts, westerns, and Lifetime dramas. Evelyn cherished her family. Her grandchildren enjoyed gathering at her home Sunday afternoons for a seriously delicious home-cooked meal. It was the foundation, the purpose, and the joy of her days.
She is preceded in death by her former husband, James R. Mitchell, Sr., and one daughter-in-law, Muriel Mitchell.
Left to cherish her memories and life lessons are her two sons, James R. Mitchell, Jr. and Ronnie Mitchell (Maxine); grandson, James R. Mitchell, III (Twanda); granddaughters, Shanece Tyson (Jessie), Tarsha Mitchell, and Tamika Phillips (Robert); great-grandchildren, Keilah Tyson, A’Naiya Mitchell, Elijah Cherry, and Amani Mitchell and a host of cousins and other relatives.
