On Saturday, April 4, 2020 Eugenia L. Grant received her wings from the Lord. She was a loving and loyal wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, aunt, cousin, and a cherished friend. Eugenia, lovingly known as “Gina” was born on September 5, 1953 to Margaret V. Shelton Savage and the late Junie M. Copeland. She was educated by Portsmouth City Public Schools.

She was a member of Emanuel AME Church of Portsmouth, VA and participated in various church services such as singing in the choir and taught Sunday and vocational bible school. She worked hard as a production line worker at UniFirst and Stihl for some years. After retirement Gina enjoyed chatting with family and friends while watching daytime stories. She was known for decorating her home and enjoyed other arts and crafts activities. Gina understood the value of hard work and instilled in her children the same value and importance of involving God in their lives. She was known to be a good listener and many people enjoyed conversing with her. Gina was a wonderful mother that was protective of her children and always encouraged her children to be their best. She knew how to make a house feel like a home through her decorating, home cooked meals, and welcoming spirit. Her presence will greatly be missed. She was an extremely loyal person and cared deeply for the people around her. Gina will always be remembered for her spunk, straight forward attitude and playful spirit.

    Crossing the Bar
Sunset and evening star, And one clear call for me!
And may there be no moaning of the bar,
when I pull out to sea,
But such a tide as moving seems asleep,
Too full for sound and foam,
When that which drew from out the boundless deep
    Turns again home.
    Twilight and evening bell,
    And after that the dark!
And may there be no sadness of farewell,
    When I embark;
For tho’ from out our Bourne of Time and Place
The flood may bear me far,
I hope to see my Pilot face to face
When I have crost the Bar.
I will see you on the other side Sis… Love you,
    Your brother.

I had the privilege of celebrating the Christmas holiday in Newport News, Virginia, with Gina and her family, including her mother, Ms. Margaret Savage, Ms. Lydia Savage, Brother Bingo and Yolanda and Michael Savage Junior (Boo) I had the honor of engaging in a conversation with Gina in her the mothers home in Portsmouth, Virginia with her children including Dr Chasay Copland, Christina, Earl and the husband Albert Grant.
For the period I had known Gina, I had found her to be a down-to-earth devout Christian, ultrustic, who would always put the interest of others above her own interest. She epitomized all the Christian virtues. For the period Gina was briefly Ill, I engaged in daily prayers with her, and her responses gave an indication of her desire to hold on to life. I had always assured her that she woul live long to enjoy the fruits of her labor. Gina is not dead. She has transitioned into a higher realm of life. ‘Those who believe in me, though they die (in the flesh), continue to live on. ‘And to the family: ‘Let not your heart be troubled. Believe in God, and believe in me also (John 14:1)

With deepest sympathy, I am truly sorry for the passing of Mrs. Grant. While I know that there will be some very sad moments, I pray that the memories that you have had with her are able to carry you through. May she have eternal resting peace.

Chesay, I know that there is no one in this world that is like your mother, but you know that I’m always here for you for whatever you need even if its just to talk about her and cry. I love you friend and I truly wish that I was able to be there with you all today.
