Esther Shaw Payton, 80, of Chesapeake, Virginia, entered the gates of heaven in her sleep on Tuesday, August 7, 2018, at her home. She was born April 15, 1938, in South Carolina to the late Corine Mack Clark and Samuel Peterson. Early in her lift she met and married the late Wilbert E. Payton, Sr.

She is survived by her brother, Moses Simpkins of Chesapeake, Virginia; five children, Michelle Payton-Kenner, Severn of
Maryland, Sheena Payton of Chesapeake, Virginia, Wilbert E. Payton, Jr. of Chesapeake, Virginia, Dwain L. Payton of Virginia Beach, Virginia and Kenneth F. Payton of Chesterfield, Virginia; five grandchildren, Relishia Payton-Lynn, Tiffany Gibbs, Aris and Ariel Payton, Alexandria Payton and Jamel Bell; and four great grandchildren, Rayana Payton-Lynn, Rhyan Payton-Lynn, Patrick Payton-Lynn of Severn, Maryland, and Kyrie Gibbs, Baltimore, Maryland; and one great-great grandchild,
Aiden Payton and two daughters in law, Cheryl Payton and Janet Nixon Payton.

In Esther’s earlier life before meeting the late Wilbert Payton, Sr., she traveled and modeled women’s clothing in New York City for modeling houses for several years, and later returned to her home in Lamberts Point, Virginia. Esther joined and became a member of the Mount Carmel Baptist Church, Norfolk, Virginia for over 40 years until her death in 2018. She volunteered as a Usher and was a member of the churches Nurse Corp. Esther worked and retired after 25 years from Lynn Shores Manor Nursing Home as a nurse’s aide in Virginia Beach. Mrs. “P” as she was known to friends and called Mother by her children was an excellent cook and enjoyed preparing meals for her family and friends, traveling and taking care of the elderly after she retired. Esther had an unwavering faith in God and loved the Lord. Over the years, she was actively involved with the church and assisted with numerous fundraising and organizational events. She loved western movies and attending broadway shows and plays.
