Ernestine Joyce Burden transitioned from labor to reward on June 5, 2025.
Born on June 22, 1954, in Norwalk, Connecticut, to the late Louis and Esther Boyd, Ernestine was a proud graduate of Brien McMahon High School. She dedicated over 20 years of service to the Hilton Hotel, where her warmth and work ethic touched the lives of many.
Ernestine was united in marriage to the love of her life, Barney Burden, with whom she shared 48 beautiful years until his passing. Their love was a true partnership built on mutual respect and deep affection.
A lifelong lover of music, Ernestine had a vibrant spirit and a passion for music. She and her sister, Sharon, shared a love for shopping and listening to music together, a bond they cherished throughout their lives.
Known affectionately as a DJ in the Norfolk, Virginia, New York City, and Norwalk, Connecticut areas, Ernestine’s deep appreciation for all genres—especially jazz—brought joy to many, and her home was always filled with rhythm and joy.
She also had a generous heart and a gift for hospitality. Her kitchen was always open, and she took great pride in cooking for her community, ensuring everyone felt welcome and well-fed.
Her legacy lives in the hearts of those she leaves behind: her beloved son Javawn Burden; two cherished grandchildren, Jasmine Burden and Javawn Burden, Jr.; one precious great-grandchild, JaLanni Burden; her devoted sister, Sharon Boyd of Norwalk, Connecticut; five nephews; and a host of loving family members and friends.
Ernestine’s warmth, humor, and selfless nature will be dearly missed, but her spirit will live on in every shared meal, every jazz note, and every act of kindness inspired by her memory.
