Ernest Eugene Davis, age 91, of Portsmouth, Virginia, passed away peacefully on May 2, 2025.
Ernest, affectionately known as Unk, lived a life marked by kindness, playfulness, and quiet strength.
Ernest grew up with a love for playing football and a strong work ethic that guided him throughout his life. He enjoyed traveling the East Coast installing tennis courts. He was one of the founding members of the Falcon Social Club established in Mt. Herman and a member and an usher at New First Baptist Church, Taylorsville.
Ernest was a man of character and charm. He had a wit, a warm smile, and a love for carpentry, food, and football, especially the Washington Commanders. He was often heard humming or whistling an unknown tune.
Ernest is survived by his daughter, Sharon Waters; grandchildren, Keia and Travis Waters; great-grandson, Travis, Jr.; and his stepdaughter, Angela Griffin; step-grandchildren, Takecia, Sharita, and Malik Griffin; and several cousins, who brought him immeasurable joy. He was preceded in death by his wife, Doris Jean Davis, and parents, Norris Davis and Lizzette Bradley-Humphrey.
We are especially grateful to all the caregivers at PHR, hospice workers, special friends Joe Burton, Shirley Patillo, Richard McCormick, Kathy Sumner, and family for their unwavering support and compassion.
Though our hearts are heavy, we find comfort in knowing that Ernest is present with the Lord, and his legacy of love and laughter will live on through all who knew him.
