Emmitt Jerome Wright was born in Burgaw, North Carolina, on December 1, 1947, to the late Beulah and Willie Wright. He was the youngest son of thirteen children. Siblings predeceased him: Catherline, Beulah Mae, Hattie, Edward, James, Dan, Frank, Major, Roscoe, Tom, and Louis. He was affectionately called Uncle E, Mr. Jerry, and Veteran Wright. He passed away peacefully at home with his loving family’s support.
Emmitt graduated from C.F. Pope High School and attended LaGuardia Community College. He was drafted into the United States Army and proudly served his country during the Vietnam War. Veteran Wright was honorably discharged from the US Army as a Sergeant in 1970, with respectable achievements.
After Veteran Wright’s military service, he married his life partner, Diane V. Newby, on January 30, 1971. They moved to Queens, NY, where they raised three children who will miss him deeply. He worked at Eagle Electric and UPS until his early retirement in 2009. He was an amazing gardener and capitalized on his love for agriculture by operating a landscaping business. He grew his own fruits and vegetables, and had the best, well-groomed yard on the block.
Music was his favorite art form. He played music constantly and really enjoyed concerts and plays. He also loved going to the casino and was a great fisherman.
Emmitt studied the bible and developed a personal relationship with God. He had a home bible study and regularly engaged in letter writing to share bible teachings.
He loved to cook and entertain. He would often host family and friends to play cards and socialize. Everyone knew better than to sit at the table if they were not a seasoned Spades or Bid Whist player.
Everyone appreciated his concern, generosity, and respect he had for his family. Emmitt was witty and generous and will be sorely missed.
Emmitt leaves to cherish his loving memories: children Travis (Jackie), Sharon and Perrin; grandchildren, D’Andre, Danielle, Travis, Perrin and Samaya; great grandson Jado; siblings Willie Jr. (Catherine) and Willie Scott, brother-in-law Calvin (Wanda); sister-in-law Shirley (Russell); and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family and beloved friends.
And he will wipe out every tear from their eyes, and death will be no more, neither will mourning, nor outcry, not pain be anymore. The former things have passed away. – Revelation 21:4

April 23, 2025 at 9:39 amI was truly saddened to hear about the passing of your beloved Emmitt . A true testament of one’s life is the morals and values that they pass down onto later generations. In the time I have known D’Andre and Mama Sharon, it has been abundantly clear that they were passed down the delicate balance of love, strength, and resilience. May you continue to pass along Emmitt’s life lessons through your own teachings as well as the heartfelt stories you all have to share. Please know that I am here for you during this difficult time. If you need anything, please don’t hesitate to reach out.
With heartfelt sympathy,

April 23, 2025 at 4:12 pmExpectations — What Do They Really Mean?
“Expectations” — such a familiar word, yet do we truly grasp its weight?
In life, we often expect our fathers, brothers, uncles, or friends to live up to an image we’ve created — an ideal often shaped by fairy tales or Disney movies. He’s always there, never angry, always laughing at our jokes, never missing a game or a play. He’s everything we need, exactly when we need him to be.
But rarely do we pause to understand why he is the way he is. Why he acts the way he does. We don’t often offer him the same grace and compassion that we, too, will need one day.
The pressures placed on Black men today are not the same as those of generations past — and they won’t be the same for the next generation either. So when you judge someone try to understand his plight, take a moment to understand his journey, his failed pains, his hopes and dreams that did not come to pass. Love as we want to be loved and forgive as you need to be forgiven.
Uncle Emmitt — may peace and blessings be upon you. May God forgive you of your sin and welcome you into Jannah by wrapping you in His eternal embrace. And to those of us thats left behind, let’s offer the forgiveness to one another with all of our short comings that we hope the Most High will one day offer us.
Peace and blessings.

April 30, 2025 at 12:36 pmTo the Wright family,
We are so sorry 😢 for the loss of your father Emmitt, he was a very special person always very respectful and humble, a hard worker doing what he loved to do my neighbors yard.
I know you all will miss your dad, but he is resting, soon you will see him and your mom Diane again in the resurrection, that Jehovah God and his Son Jesus promises at
John 5: 28, 29.
We are keeping you all in our prayers and thoughts.
