Elvia Gray Lowery

Sunrise: December 29, 1939

Sunset: May 6, 2021

Elvia Gray Lowery was born on December 29, 1939 in Norfolk, Virginia to the late Henry and Maude Lowery.  She was blessed to have had four brothers, all now deceased – Henry, Jr., Jasper, Clifford, and Alonzo. On Thursday, May 6, 2021 at    10:56 a.m., the Lord reached down and picked a red rose by the name of Elvia Gray.  She was loved by all who had the opportunity to meet her.

Elvia was raised in the Campostella area and attended Norfolk Public Schools. During her younger years, Elvia attended First Baptist Church. There she participated in the activities of the church.

In her later years, Elvia Gray, as she was called by some, moved to New York where she lived for several years. While living in New York, Elvia Gray was a telephone operator and a beautician. She loved to joke and have a good time. Whenever you were around her, she would have you laughing so hard until it was difficult to stop.

Elvia returned to Virginia. When she returned, she joined First Pentecostal United Holy Church in Norfolk. A faithful member, she was, until her health began to fail her. She was a member of the Senior Choir, served on the Usher Board, worked with the Mission’s Department, and attended Sunday School faithfully.

Elvia loved the LORD with all of her heart.  When you saw her in church or at home, you could see that she truly did. She would let out a scream, wave her hands and sometimes land in a shout. Elvia loved good singing too, and definitely some good preaching, and powerful praying.

More of Elvia Gray’s passions were some good ole’ fried fish, cornbread, and a cup or glass of crushed ice on the side.

Elvia loved her family and enjoyed being with them. It is in all of those memories that she leaves to cherish a host of relatives and friends far and near.  We all will miss you dearly, Elvia-Gray.

You lived well, and now you are at peace. Rest Elvia Gray, rest.
