Rev. Dr. Elmer Lee Phillips, Sr.

Elmer L. Phillips Sr. was born on August 16, 1932, to the late Johnson Phillips and Carrie Dove Phillips. He was a native of Richland, NC (Lenoir County). He later met the love of his life, Patsy A. Taylor, and they were married in 1953. They were a loving married couple for 68 years until the Lord called her home on March 4, 2022.

They collectively had six children: Jimmie Phillips, Alvin Ray Phillips, aka Abdul L. Aswad, Elmer L. Phillips Jr, Patricia Phillips, Keith Edmonds, and Cynthia Carter.

Elmer and his family relocated to Virginia from North Carolina in 1952, where he worked for Richard Foundry for 15 years (retired) and Ford Motor Company for over 30 years before retiring.

Elmer was a hard worker and was dedicated to his family. He was involved in his community civic league and various church ministries at Antioch Missionary Baptist Church and was a Tidewater Metro Minister Conference member. For over 19 years, he was the Pastor of New St. Mark Baptist Church from 1992-2012.

Elmer is predeceased by his wife, Patsy Phillips, mother, Carrie Dove, father, Johnson Phillips, sister Ethel Mae Phillips, two brothers, Charles Phillips and Theory Phillips, and a son, Jimmie Phillips.

Elmer leaves to cherish his memory two daughters, Patricia Phillips-Otero and Cynthia Carter, three sons, Alvin Ray Phillips, aka Abdul Aswad, Elmer L. Phillips Jr. (Jennifer), and Keith Edmonds, one sister, Mae Belle Robinson, a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, a host of other relatives and friends and a special caregiver Precious Fonville.
