Ellis A. Harrell, Sr., aka HOP or HOP 7, went home to be with his heavenly father on Tuesday, October 1, 2024. God whispered Ellis’ name into his ear and said, “Your work here on earth has been completed.” He gently and peacefully yields to his voice. Surrounded by his loved ones, he quietly slipped while being welcomed by his family members that have gone on before him.
Ellis was born September 15, 1949, in Chesapeake, Virginia, to the late Samuel D. Harrell, Sr. and Marie Virginia Harrell-Cameron. He attended G.W. Carver High School in Chesapeake, Virginia, graduating in 1967. After graduating, he went on to serve three years in the United States Army. After returning from the Army, he married the love of his life, Ada Vines. From that union, three sons were born: Ellis A. Harrell, Jr., Andre L. Harrell, Sr., and Marques L. Harrell, Sr.
Ellis is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Ada Harrell; one daughter, Tamika Howard; three sons, Ellis A. Harrell, Jr. (Kim), Andre L. Harrell, Sr. (Shay) and Marques L. Harrell, Sr.(Courtney); ten grandchildren along with eight great-grandchildren; one brother, Milton “Jeep” Harrell, Sr. (Marion); two special sisters-in-law, Lynteen Harrell and Carolyn Warren and a host of nieces and nephews.
Ellis loved all sports; his favorite baseball team was the New York Yankees, his favorite football team was the Indianapolis Colts, and his favorite basketball team was the Lakers.
Ellis was an active member of Tabernacle Church, where he served on the male and female usher board. He was also a Top Flight Security Guard for the church. He was a member of the South Norfolk Civic League in Chesapeake and the South Norfolk Reunion Chesapeake.
Ellis A. Harrell, aka Hop or Hop 7, will be sorely missed by all who knew and loved him.

October 5, 2024 at 1:07 pmDeath is a bitter destiny we all must follow and in times like these there are no words that can fully capture the grief we feel. I was truly shocked when I learned of Hop’s transition yesterday. My prayers are with you and your family as you travel through the shadows of death. Be encouraged that God will always take care of you, even in your darkest days and I will be praying for you.

October 8, 2024 at 8:43 amOur hearts are at a place of sorrow. When our Uncle Ellis, “Hop” passed on October 1st, we felt a pain that only God himself can heal. Ellis will be sorely missed. All the Sundays we spent together in worship service will Never be forgotten. To see him come in with a smile on his face with an eager heart ready to stand proudly as an usher in the House of The Lord, will always be a permanent memory fixed in our hearts. We will always love him. Rest now our dear Uncle because we know, to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord. 🙏🏿🙏🏿
