Ella Minerva Moses, affectionately known as “Mopsy,” was born to Lena (Moore) and William McKinley Clark on December 12, 1934, in South Norfolk, Virginia, now known as Chesapeake. She was called to eternal rest on Thursday, November 7, 2024.
Ella was the 7th child of 10 beloved brothers and sisters. Ella is preceded in death by sisters Sallie Mae Ghoston, Bernice Clark (affectionately known as “Baby Sister”), and Mildred Tompkins, as well as her brothers William R. Clark, James S. Clark, Mack C. Clark, Claude R. Clark, Freddie Clark, and Leroy Clark.
Ella spent her early years in Chesapeake, VA. She graduated from George W. Carver High School. She attended The School of The Art Institute of Chicago for one year. She returned to Chesapeake and earned an Associate’s degree from Norfolk State College, now known as Norfolk State University. Ella continued her collegiate education and earned a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting/Bookkeeping Education from Baruch College in Manhattan, New York.
While residing in Chesapeake, VA, Ella met Usher Moses while he served in the Navy. They married and moved to the Crown Heights section of Brooklyn, New York, and were blessed with five children. In 1967, the family moved to 33-35 Saratoga Avenue in Bedford Stuyvesant, Brooklyn. They enjoyed eleven years in a strong family-centered apartment community.
In the summer of 1978, Ella returned to the Tidewater area with her children for a better quality of life while keeping a strong connection with her family and friends in Brooklyn, NY.
Ella later held a position with the Department of Defense Finance and Accounting Services in Norfolk. She served as a budget analyst for 19 years. She would eventually retire in March of 1997.
For over 40 years, Ella was a dedicated member of New Bethel Baptist Church in Portsmouth, VA., where Reverand Dr. Mark Whitaker is the Pastor. She joined New Bethel under Bishop Rev. James Whitaker’s pastoral care. She served faithfully on the Usher Board, welcoming others on Sundays with warmth and kindness.
Ella found joy in life’s simple pleasures, such as watching Hallmark movies, Judge shows, solving puzzles (Sudoku, Cross Word Puzzles, Word Search), and listening to gospel music. She was an excellent artist with a passion for drawing and painting.
Her legacy lives on through her children: Sheldon Moses, Usher Anthony “Tony” Moses (Pamela Moses), Sandranette “Sandy” Moses, Sabrina Ladson (Frank Ladson), and Sherod McKinley Moses (Anita Hill Moses). Grandchildren: Stephanie Moses, Andrea Moses, Brandon Maurice Moses (Jada Moses), Asha Moses, Ammiel Moses, Andre Fields Jr., Evan Moses, and Tamar Moses. She was also blessed to experience the joy of her great-grandson, Maxon Alexander Moses. In addition, she leaves to mourn a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Ella will be fondly remembered for her unwavering faith, her commitment to family, her educational influence, and her compassionate heart. She leaves behind a legacy of love, resilience, and service.

November 22, 2024 at 11:50 amTo Ella’s Family: she was truly a lady in many ways. I met her when I was 18 years old. She took me under her wing and taught me my job at NAVMTO. To know her is to love her. Keep her memories alive in your heart. I was blessed to meet her again after I relocated here; she walked up to me at New Bethel and we were able to reconnect. I am blessed to have known such a wonderful lady. Blessings to each of you.
